Checklist: enabling the Safeguard Safari extension on a Mac

A short checklist for IT: confirm status, install from the Mac App Store, enable in Safari Settings and review site access before relying on it.

To enable the Safeguard Safari extension on a Mac, install the Mac app from the Mac App Store, sign in, then open Safari, Settings, Extensions and tick Safeguard. Check the download page first, because when we read it the Mac extension was shown as in Apple review.

Before you start

  • A Mac that meets the app's requirements. The iOS listing states macOS 12.0 or later and an M1 chip or later for running the app on Mac, and the download page's desktop app needs macOS 12 or later.
  • A Safeguard account.
  • Admin rights if your organization restricts app installs.

The checklist

Confirm status. Read the Safari on Mac line on safeguard.sh/download. If it still says in Apple review, wait, and do not install anything that claims to be the Safeguard extension from elsewhere.

Install from the Mac App Store only. The page says that is the distribution route. Check the developer name reads Safeguard.sh Inc.

Open and sign in. Open the app once and sign in with your Safeguard account.

Enable in Safari. Safari, Settings, Extensions, then tick Safeguard.

Review access. In the same Extensions pane, Safari lets you see and change which websites an extension can use. Look at what is set for Safeguard and tighten it if you can.

Test. Open a page and confirm the extension is present. If a Safari window was open when you ticked the box, open a new tab.

Record it. Write down the app version, who installed it and when, for your inventory.

What if it does not show up?

The extension may not be ticked, the app may not have been opened, or the Mac listing may not yet be live. If the app is installed and the box is missing, restart Safari and check again. If a company workspace is involved, the App Store notes say the Safari extension needs the workspace administrator to enable it, so ask your admin.

What this checklist does not claim

We do not describe what the extension displays, because the pages we reviewed do not. It is a setup checklist, not a feature tour.

How should IT handle a team rollout?

Keep it small. Pick two or three Mac users, run the checklist, and write down every point where someone got stuck. The common ones are installing before the listing is live, forgetting to tick the box in Safari, and never opening the app once to sign in. Turn those into a one page guide with the official link at the top, and tell people to ignore any other source.

What to do

  1. Check the status line.
  2. Install from the store.
  3. Enable and review site access.
  4. Pilot with a few users, then publish the steps.

Quick check

Can I install the extension from a file someone sends me?

No. The download page names the Mac App Store as the route. Do not install extensions from other sources.

Does Safari let me limit what the extension reads?

Safari's Extensions pane lets you review and change website access for each extension. Check it after you enable Safeguard.
