What is a working day like with Safeguard in the Firefox sidebar?

A walk through one engineer's day with the Safeguard Firefox sidebar, from documented features: account answers, page context, files, threads.

With the Safeguard sidebar open in Firefox, a day looks like a series of short questions asked beside the page you are reading: what is open, how severe, which project, and does this CVE touch what we shipped. This is an illustrative day, built from the features the listing documents, not a recorded customer story.

Morning: what is open?

You open Firefox, click the Open Safeguard icon and the sidebar appears. If you signed in yesterday, the docs warn that a known cookie setting may ask you to sign in again after a restart. You approve the browser from your account and carry on.

First question: which open findings are highest severity this week? The listing says the sidebar answers about open findings, their severity and affected projects, from your account.

Mid morning: reading an advisory

A maintainer posts an advisory for a library you use. You attach the current tab. The listing says the sidebar reads the page only when you ask, and clicks nothing. You ask how the CVE affects the version you shipped, which the listing names as something it answers.

You still read the advisory yourself. The sidebar is a second reader that knows your projects.

Noon: a screenshot

A colleague pastes a scanner screenshot into chat. The listing says you can attach a file or a screenshot to a question. You attach it and ask what it means for your open findings.

Afternoon: continuing a thread

You started a question in the sidebar and finish it later in the full web app. The listing says threads are saved and shared with the web app, so nothing is lost by switching.

Late afternoon: compliance posture

A reviewer asks where you stand. The listing says the sidebar can answer about compliance posture. You ask, read the answer and then open the web app for the detail you would attach to an audit file.

What the day does not include

  • Scanning your repository. The docs call the extension AI search only.
  • Enforcing anything. A sidebar cannot block a merge.
  • Working while signed out. A Safeguard account is required.

How do you know an answer is right?

Treat the first week as calibration. Ask questions whose answers you can confirm in the web app, and note where the sidebar agrees. The listing says answers come from your account, which makes them checkable against the same data. Where an answer matters for a decision, such as closing a finding, open the finding itself and read the evidence.

What to do

  1. Pick three questions you ask every week and try them in the sidebar.
  2. Use attach tab only on pages you are comfortable sharing as context.
  3. Keep the web app for evidence and the sidebar for quick reads.
  4. Note which answers you verified, so your team learns where to trust it.

Quick check

Does the sidebar read every page I visit?

The listing says it reads the page only when you ask, by attaching the current tab, and that it clicks nothing.

Can I continue a Firefox conversation in the web app?

Yes. The listing says threads are saved and shared with the Safeguard web app.
