On a Mac, the Safeguard Safari extension is included in the Mac app, which is distributed through the Mac App Store. After installing, you enable it in Safari, Settings, Extensions. When we fetched the download page, it marked the Mac listing as in Apple review, so check the page for current status.
Where does it come from?
The download page says the Safari extension on Mac is included in the Mac app, distributed through the Mac App Store. As with iPhone and iPad, you do not hunt for a separate extension. You install the app and then switch the extension on.
What was the status when we checked?
The page marked the Mac Safari extension as in Apple review. That is a status that changes, so we do not state it as available or unavailable. Open safeguard.sh/download and read the line yourself before you plan around it.
The App Store listing we fetched shows macOS 12.0 or later with an Apple M1 chip or later, and says "Designed for iPad. Not verified for macOS." That is Apple's wording on the iOS listing, and we read it as a reason to rely on the download page for the Mac route, not the iOS listing.
How do I enable it?
- Install the Mac app from the Mac App Store, once the page shows it available.
- Open the app and sign in with your Safeguard account.
- Open Safari, then Settings, then Extensions.
- Tick the box next to Safeguard.
- Return to a Safari tab to use it.
Do I need the Mac app, or the desktop download?
These are different things. The download page also offers a desktop app, version 3.2.2, as a DMG for Apple Silicon at 115 MB, requiring macOS 12 or later, signed and notarized. That is the desktop app. The Safari extension is described as part of the Mac App Store app. Do not assume the DMG includes the Safari extension, because the page does not say so.
What can we not tell you?
The pages we reviewed do not describe what the Safari extension does on a page or which website permissions it asks for. They give the install route and the enable path only. Ask Safeguard for details before you roll it out to a team.
What if the status changes?
Status lines move. If the page shows the Mac extension as available when you read this, follow the checklist post in this series. If it still says in review, do not install anything from another source to get ahead of it.
What to do
- Check the status line on the download page.
- When available, install from the Mac App Store only.
- Enable under Safari, Settings, Extensions.
- Review which sites Safari lets the extension access.
- Keep the desktop app separate in your inventory.
