Can the Safeguard Chrome extension help triage a critical CVE?

The Safeguard Chrome extension opens Safeguard search in a side panel next to any page. Use it to ask about a critical CVE while you read the advisory.

Yes, within limits. The Safeguard Chrome extension opens Safeguard's AI search in a side panel beside whatever page you are reading, so you can ask about a critical CVE next to its advisory. It is a window onto the web app, not a separate scanner, so triage depth comes from the platform behind it.

What does the extension actually do?

According to the Safeguard docs, the extension adds a toolbar icon. Click it and a side panel opens next to the current page, loaded with the same search experience you get in the web app at app.safeguard.sh. Chrome and Edge use a side panel.

The docs describe it as intentionally thin. It embeds the production search page and nothing else. You sign in inside that embedded page the way you would in a browser tab. The extension does not store credentials or call Safeguard APIs by itself, and the docs say it requests only the side panel permission, with no host permissions and no data collected by the extension.

That design shapes what you can expect. It cannot read the advisory page for you or highlight text on it. You type or paste the question.

What does a triage session look like?

Say a security advisory lands in your feed and rates a library flaw as critical. You open the advisory in a tab, then click the Safeguard icon.

In the panel, ask the questions you would ask a colleague: which of our projects use this package, which version, and is the vulnerable code reachable from our code. Because the panel is the same search as the web app, the answers draw on your tenant's data, not just public text.

The platform's reachability analysis is what turns "we have the package" into "we call the vulnerable function." That is the question that decides whether this is a drop-everything day or a scheduled upgrade.

Keep the advisory visible on the left. You can compare the affected version range against what the panel reports, and paste the fixed version from the advisory into your next question.

What the extension is not for

It is not where you approve fixes or change policy. For heavier work, such as editing policies or deep inspection of a software bill of materials, open the full web app. The panel is for quick questions while you read.

There is also a separate Chrome extension, Gold Open Source, for package lookups. That one is for checking a package while you browse registries and repositories, rather than asking about your own estate.

What makes a good triage question?

Specific questions get specific answers. Instead of asking whether a CVE is serious, give the panel the package name, the affected version range from the advisory and the project you care about. Ask for the count of affected projects first, then drill into the highest-risk one.

It also helps to ask for the next step in the same breath. For example, ask which fixed version is available and whether upgrading changes a major version, so you can judge the effort before you raise a ticket. Reading the advisory and the answer side by side saves the tab switching that usually slows triage.

What to do

  1. Install Safeguard from the Chrome Web Store listing.
  2. Click the toolbar icon and sign in inside the panel.
  3. Open the advisory in the main tab.
  4. Ask which of your projects use the affected package and version.
  5. Ask whether the vulnerable code is reachable, then open the full web app to read the evidence.
  6. Record the decision in your ticket, with the advisory link and the date.

Quick check

Does the extension read the page I am on?

No. The docs describe it as embedding the Safeguard search page only. You ask your question in the panel.

Does it need extra permissions on every site?

The docs say Chrome and Edge declare a single permission, the side panel API, and no host permissions.
