When a Claude Max plan runs out of usage, you wait for the five hour session reset or the weekly reset, use a limit reset if you have one, or turn on usage credits to continue at standard API rates. These details come from Anthropic's pages fetched on 18 October 2026.
What does Max cost?
Anthropic lists two tiers. Max 5x is $100 per month and Max 20x is $200 per month, for the web subscription. Mobile pricing may vary by app platform. Max is sold as a monthly subscription only, and the company says prices and plans can change at its discretion, so confirm on the live pricing page.
Max also lists priority access at high traffic times, early access to advanced features and higher output limits. It includes monthly API credits: $100 per month for 5x and $200 for 20x.
What limits still apply?
Max raises limits, it does not remove them. Max 5x includes five times the Pro per-session usage allowance, and Max 20x includes twenty times. A session limit resets every five hours. A weekly limit applies across all models and resets at a fixed time assigned to your account.
Max has one more: a separate weekly limit for Fable. The pricing page lists Fable on Max as 50 percent of weekly limits. That means heavy use of that model can end its allowance while other models remain available. Your Settings, under Usage, shows where each stands and when the next reset arrives.
All surfaces share the same usage. Anthropic notes that claude.ai, Claude Code and Claude Desktop count toward one limit, so a long coding session can use the allowance you wanted for chat. Anthropic also reserves the right to apply other limits for capacity, such as weekly and monthly caps or limits by model and feature.
What happens when you reach a limit?
Without any extra setup, you wait. The session resets after five hours, and the weekly limit resets at your fixed time. If you have a limit reset available, you can use it to restore either the session or weekly allowance.
How do usage credits work on Max?
Usage credits let Pro, Max 5x and Max 20x subscribers continue after a limit by switching to pay-as-you-go pricing at standard API rates. When your included usage runs out with credits enabled, requests keep working and the notice reads "Now using credits."
Set them up in Settings, Usage. Add a payment method, choose a monthly spend limit or unlimited, and prepay by adding funds. Auto-reload and usage alerts are optional. Charges show up separately from the subscription.
The part that trips people up: usage credits are separate from the monthly API credits included with Max. Per the help center, those monthly credits do not apply to usage credits in Claude, Claude Code or Claude Cowork. They are for building on the API.
Should you upgrade, add credits, or change habits?
Anthropic does not publish a break-even point. Compare your own numbers. If you run out once in a while, credits with a cap are a cheap cushion. If you run out every few days on 5x, price 20x against your credit spend over the same period. If one model causes it, shift routine work to a lighter one.
The help center's tips apply here too: fresh conversations for new topics, projects for reused documents, fewer connected tools and lower effort settings on routine tasks.
What to do
- Record your next session and weekly reset times from Settings, Usage.
- Note which limit you hit: session, weekly or Fable.
- If it is the session limit, plan heavy work around the five hour windows.
- Turn on usage credits with a monthly cap you can afford.
- Compare 5x, 20x and credits using a month of your own data.
- Reread the pricing page before changing plans.
Quick check
Do the monthly API credits cover usage credits?
No. The help center says monthly API credits do not apply to usage credits in Claude, Claude Code or Claude Cowork.
Is there a discount on Max?
Anthropic says it has no standing discounts for individual plans and runs occasional limited-time promotions.
