For five security engineers, Claude Max costs from $100 per person per month, which is $500 a month before tax, and gives interactive use inside session limits. The API bills per token with no seat fee. Max suits heavy daily use by people. The API suits automation and spiky use. Prices below were fetched on 18 October 2026.

What do the published prices say?

From claude.com/pricing, fetched 18 October 2026:

  • Pro: $20 a month billed monthly, or $17 a month billed annually ($200 up front).
  • Max: starts at $100 a month. Each tier gives 5x or 20x more usage than Pro, measured per 5 hour session. The page does not list the 20x price separately in the text we fetched, so check it before budgeting.
  • Team: standard seats $25 a month billed monthly or $20 billed annually, premium seats $125 monthly or $100 annually. Team is listed for 2 to 150 users.
  • Claude Code is listed as included in all of these.
  • Usage limits apply on every plan, and prices exclude tax.

From the API pricing page, fetched the same day, per million tokens:

  • Claude Sonnet 5.5: $2 input, $10 output.
  • Claude Opus 5.5: $4 input, $20 output.

We make no claim about what any provider spends to serve these plans.

What does five people cost on each?

The arithmetic, using only the numbers above:

  • Five Max seats at the starting price: 5 x $100 = $500 a month.
  • Five Team standard seats billed monthly: 5 x $25 = $125 a month. Premium seats: 5 x $125 = $625 a month.
  • API: cost is tokens times price. At Sonnet 5.5 rates, $500 buys 250 million input tokens, or 50 million output tokens, or a mix. Real use is a mix, and long agent sessions re-read context, so input dominates.

Neither side wins on arithmetic alone. A person who runs agent sessions all day may burn far more than $100 of tokens, which favors a flat seat. A person who triages alerts twice a day may use a few dollars, which favors the API.

Which limits should drive the choice?

Session windows. Plan usage is measured per 5 hour session. If your team hits that wall during an incident, you will feel it at the worst time.

Shared accounts. Do not share one seat across five people. Read the provider terms for team use, and prefer Team seats for a group.

Automation. A scheduled job that scans repos each night is not a person at a keyboard. The API fits it better, with a budget cap and a key per job.

Data handling. Check the current terms for each product on retention and training, and put the answer in your vendor review. We have not summarized those terms here because we did not fetch them.

What to do

  1. Have each engineer log a week of real use: sessions per day, long agent runs, and any limit hits.
  2. Price the heavy users on Max or Team premium and the light users on Team standard or the API.
  3. Move scheduled and batch work to the API with per-key budgets and alerts.
  4. Re-check the pricing pages on the day you sign, since both pages say they change.
  5. Decide what data may be pasted into any model, and write it down before the first purchase.

Safeguard works with whichever model you choose: it supports Full AI, Zero AI or bring your own model, and the MCP server at mcp.safeguard.sh connects to Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or your own agent with unlimited tool calls on every plan.

Quick check

What does Claude Max cost?

The pricing page we fetched on 18 October 2026 says Max starts at $100 a month, with 5x or 20x the usage of Pro per 5 hour session.

Is the API cheaper than Max?

It depends on tokens used. Five Max seats at the starting price are $500 a month. The same money buys 250 million Sonnet 5.5 input tokens or 50 million output tokens at published rates.
