Claude Max is $100 a month for the 5x tier and $200 for the 20x tier. Anthropic does not publish a monthly token total for it. What it publishes is a multiple of Pro usage, a five-hour session limit, a weekly limit, and monthly API credits of $100 or $200 that you can spend on the API.

All figures below come from Anthropic's pricing page and help articles, fetched on 18 October 2026. Prices and plans can change at Anthropic's discretion, so check the pages before you budget.

What are the published prices?

PlanPriceNotes
Pro$17 a month on annual billing, or $20 billed monthlyBaseline for the Max multiples
Max 5x$100 a monthMonthly billing only
Max 20x$200 a monthMonthly billing only

The help center adds that these prices are for web subscriptions, and mobile pricing may vary by app platform. Prices exclude applicable tax.

What limits apply?

Max gives 5x or 20x the Pro plan's per-session usage allowance, depending on tier. Usage then runs on two clocks:

  • A session limit that resets every five hours.
  • A weekly limit across all models, which resets at a fixed time assigned to your account. You can see the next reset in Settings under Usage.

Anthropic also says it may limit usage in other ways at its discretion, such as weekly and monthly caps or model and feature usage. Usage across claude.ai, Claude Code and Claude Desktop counts toward the same limit.

What counts against you is not a flat message number. Anthropic lists length and complexity of conversations, features used, which model you chose, and effort level as factors. Longer chats that trigger automatic context management use more of your limit, and connected tools and connectors are described as token-intensive.

Is there a token number?

No. We found none on the pricing or help pages. Any figure you see for "Max tokens per month" elsewhere is an estimate by someone else, and it depends on model, context and effort. The honest answer is a multiple, not a total.

What are the monthly API credits?

Max includes monthly credits for the Claude Platform: $100 for 5x and $200 for 20x. They are separate from your plan limits. Rules from the help article:

  • You claim them by linking a Claude Console organization, after seven days on the plan.
  • They refresh each billing cycle and do not roll over.
  • They work with the Claude API, the Console Playground, Managed Agents and the Agent SDK.
  • They do not cover interactive Claude Code in the terminal, IDE, desktop or web, or extra usage in Claude.
  • When they run out, API requests stop until the next credit arrives unless you buy credits or turn on auto-reload.

What does $100 of credit buy at list prices?

Here is simple arithmetic from the published API rates. It is a ceiling, since caching, batching and output length change real cost.

ModelInput per million tokensOutput per million tokens$100 buys, input only$100 buys, output only
Opus 5.5$4$2025 million tokens5 million tokens
Sonnet 5.5$2$1050 million tokens10 million tokens

Double both columns for the $200 tier. Real workloads mix input and output, so expect less than either extreme. Prompt caching and the 50 percent batch discount the pricing page mentions can stretch credits, with caveats described on that page.

How should you decide between tiers?

Use your limit messages as the signal. If you hit the five-hour session limit regularly, 20x gives four times the 5x allowance. If you hit the weekly limit, a higher tier or usage credits are the options Anthropic documents. If you never claim the API credits, count them as zero value.

What to do

  1. Open Settings, then Usage, and note how often you reach each limit for two weeks.
  2. Cut waste first: lower effort for routine tasks, turn off connectors you do not need, start fresh chats instead of stretching long ones.
  3. Claim the API credits only if you build on the API, and link the right Console organization.
  4. Do not plan around interactive Claude Code using the credits, since they do not cover it.
  5. Recheck the pricing page before each renewal.
