Who inside your company should be able to see supplier SBOMs?

Supplier SBOMs are often shared in confidence. Set role based access, logging and sharing rules so the files help security without leaking supplier detail.

Give supplier SBOMs the same handling as other confidential supplier material: read access for security, procurement and product owners who need it, no open sharing, an access log, and a rule against forwarding. Many suppliers share under an NDA, and a leak can end the relationship.

Why this is a real question

An SBOM lists a supplier's internal building blocks. Competitors, attackers and customers could each learn something from one. When a supplier hands you a file, they usually do it on terms, written or implied. Your storage design should honor those terms by default.

Controls to apply

  1. Least privilege. Start with no access and add roles.
  2. Per supplier tagging. Mark files that carry NDA terms, and restrict export for them.
  3. Access logging. Record who opened or downloaded each file.
  4. No raw download by default. Show parsed views and findings. Allow file export only for named roles.
  5. Redacted extracts. For audits or customer questions, produce a summary that removes supplier internal names.
  6. Transfer rules. Do not email files around. Link to the store.
  7. Retention. Delete or archive according to the agreement.

Be careful with onward sharing

A customer may ask what is inside your product, which may include supplier components. Do not paste a supplier's SBOM into your own. Check your agreement first, and consider sharing your own SBOM, which records your product and its components, instead of passing theirs on.

Combine access with integrity

Restricting reads does not prevent tampering. Record a content hash on receipt and, where the supplier signs, verify it. The signature shows who published the file, though it does not show the file is complete.

Try it yourself

Click through it at your own pace, or open it full screen.

See how controls map to evidence, then think about which of the controls above you could point to in an audit.

Where Safeguard fits

Safeguard offers compliance and evidence automation alongside SBOM and dependency scanning, which helps you show how supplier data is governed. You can try a free scan first.

Quick check

Can I give developers the raw supplier file?

Usually give them findings relevant to their code. Raw files expose more than they need.

Can I forward a supplier SBOM to my customer?

Only if your agreement allows it. Otherwise share your own SBOM.
