Claude Pro for security work: what fits inside the plan (October 2026)

Prices and limits fetched 18 Oct 2026. Claude Pro suits ad hoc security work like triage and diff review. Bulk or always-on jobs belong on the API.

Claude Pro fits ad hoc security work: triaging one advisory, reading a diff, drafting a query, explaining a finding. Bulk scanning and always-on automation fit the API better, because Pro has session and weekly usage limits shared across chat and Claude Code. Prices and limits below were read from Anthropic's pages on 18 October 2026.

What does Pro cost and include?

On Anthropic's pricing page (fetched 18 October 2026), Claude Pro is 20 dollars a month billed monthly, or 17 dollars a month with annual billing, with 200 dollars billed up front. The page says Pro includes everything in Free, plus Claude Code, Projects, more models, Claude in Chrome and Microsoft 365, and more usage, stating that Pro gives at least 5x more usage per 5-hour session than Free.

Prices and plan contents change. Check the page before you decide.

What are the limits?

Anthropic's support article on using Claude Code with Pro or Max says these plans have a five-hour session limit and a weekly limit, shared across Claude and Claude Code. Activity in VS Code, Cursor and JetBrains counts against the same limits. The article does not break down per-task costs, and notes that larger repositories may need more capacity. You can see your remaining allocation with the status command.

Pro buys you a pool, not a fixed number of tasks. That is the key planning fact for a security team.

Which security work fits inside Pro?

Work that is interactive, bursty and done by one person fits well.

  • Triage conversations. Paste a vulnerability description and your dependency snippet, and ask whether your usage matches the vulnerable pattern.
  • Diff review. Ask for a security-minded read of a single pull request before a human reviews it.
  • Query and script help. Drafting a log search, a regular expression or a small script to parse scanner output.
  • Explaining and writing. Turning a finding into a ticket, or an advisory into plain language for a manager.
  • Local investigation with Claude Code. Reading an unfamiliar repository while you chase a question.

Treat model output as a draft. Anything it suggests that touches credentials or production still needs a person.

What does not fit?

Anything that runs without a person watching is a poor match for a shared, windowed allowance: scanning every finding in a backlog, summarizing every pull request across many repositories, or a nightly job. Those workloads are predictable and large, and they hit session limits at the wrong moment. Claude Code's GitHub Action can authenticate with a subscription token, but runs then share the same limits, so a busy repository can starve your own interactive work.

What would the API cost for the same task?

Anthropic's API pricing page lists, per million tokens, Claude Sonnet 5.5 at 2 dollars input and 10 dollars output, Claude Opus 5.5 at 4 and 20, and Claude Haiku 5.5 at 0.10 and 0.50 for prompts up to 100,000 tokens. The Batch API offers a 50 percent discount on input and output tokens.

A worked example using those published Sonnet 5.5 rates: reviewing a 20,000 token diff with a 2,000 token answer costs 0.04 dollars of input plus 0.02 dollars of output, which is 0.06 dollars. Run that for 500 pull requests in a month and the arithmetic gives 30 dollars. This is an illustration of published prices, not a quote, and it ignores caching, retries and longer contexts. Compare it with your real token counts.

Where does Safeguard fit?

You can connect Safeguard to Claude through the Safeguard MCP server at mcp.safeguard.sh, so questions about your dependencies and findings can use real data rather than pasted text. MCP tool calls are unlimited on every Safeguard plan. Claude's own usage limits still apply on the Claude side, and Safeguard also works with Zero AI or your own model.

What to do

  1. List the security tasks your team does and mark each as interactive or unattended.
  2. Put interactive, bursty tasks on Pro.
  3. Estimate tokens per unattended task and price it with the API rates above.
  4. Use batch processing for unattended work that can wait.
  5. Watch your usage status for two weeks before you decide.
  6. Connect your findings through MCP so answers use real data.
  7. Re-check prices and limits before each renewal.

Quick check

Does Claude Code use a separate allowance on Pro?

No. Anthropic says the limits are shared across Claude and Claude Code, and IDE usage counts too.

Is the example cost a price quote?

No. It applies Anthropic's published Sonnet 5.5 token rates to an assumed task size. Your real cost depends on actual tokens and settings.
