When a Claude Pro plan runs out of its session or weekly usage, you have three options: wait for the limit to reset, turn on usage credits to keep working at pay-as-you-go rates, or move to a Max plan. Everything below comes from Anthropic's published pages, fetched on 18 October 2026.

What does Pro cost and include?

Anthropic's pricing page lists Pro at $17 per month with the annual discount ($200 billed up front) or $20 if billed monthly. The help center says $20 per month in the US, with local pricing where supported, and notes that prices and plans can change at Anthropic's discretion. Check the live page before you decide.

Pro includes more usage than the free plan, access to Claude Code, and priority access during high-traffic periods. It does not include API usage through the Claude Console. If you want both, you pay for the API separately.

What are the limits?

The help center describes two kinds on paid plans. A session limit resets every five hours. A weekly limit applies across all models and resets at a fixed time each week assigned to your account, regardless of when you start using Claude. You can see your next reset time in Settings, under Usage.

How fast you reach a limit depends on message length, attached files, the length of the current conversation, the model, the effort level and the features you use. Claude Code, claude.ai and Claude Desktop all count toward the same usage limit. The pricing comparison also shows that the Fable model on Pro is available only through usage credits.

Anthropic adds that it may limit usage in other ways to manage capacity, at its discretion.

What happens at the limit?

If you do nothing, you wait. The five hour session limit comes back on its own, and the weekly limit comes back at your fixed weekly reset. A limit reset, where available to you, can restore the session or weekly allowance.

What are usage credits?

Pro subscribers can turn on usage credits so they are not blocked at a limit. Per the help center, when you exhaust your included usage, requests switch to pay-as-you-go pricing at standard API rates and keep working. The notice changes to "Now using credits."

You enable it in Settings under Usage. You add a payment method, set a monthly spend limit or choose unlimited, and prepay by adding funds. Auto-reload is optional. These charges are separate from your subscription and appear as additional charges on your bill. If you subscribed through a mobile app, you can enable credits only on the web version.

Usage credits are not the same as the monthly API credits that come with Max plans, which do not apply to usage in Claude or Claude Code.

When does Max make sense?

Max 5x is listed at $100 per month and Max 20x at $200, with five or twenty times the Pro per-session usage allowance. Max also adds priority access and monthly API credits. Do the arithmetic against your own pattern. If you hit the limit once a month, a small credit cap may cost less than a higher tier. If you hit it every week, a higher tier may be simpler. Anthropic's pages do not give a break-even number, so track your usage in the Usage screen for a month first.

How can you stretch what you have?

The help center suggests starting new conversations for new topics, batching related questions, using projects for documents you reuse, turning off extended thinking and tools you do not need, and choosing a lighter model for routine work. Longer conversations consume more of the limit.

What to do

  1. Open Settings, then Usage, and note your session and weekly reset times.
  2. Track how often you hit a limit over four weeks.
  3. If rarely, enable usage credits with a low monthly cap as a safety net.
  4. If often, compare the cost of credits against Max 5x using your own numbers.
  5. Cut waste: new chats per topic, fewer connected tools, lighter models for easy tasks.
  6. Recheck the pricing page before any purchase.

Quick check

Do I lose my chats when I hit the limit?

The help center describes waiting for a reset or using credits. It does not describe chats being deleted when you reach a limit.

Does Pro include the Claude API?

No. Pro does not include API usage through the Console. API use is paid separately.
