AI features in compliance tools: what to verify before relying on them

What to check when a compliance platform offers AI drafted policies, evidence mapping, or questionnaire answers: review steps, data handling, and accuracy.

AI features in compliance platforms, such as drafted policies, suggested control mapping, and questionnaire answers, can save time, but every output needs human review. Verify what data the model sees, whether answers cite your evidence, how errors are caught, and who is accountable. You remain responsible for what you sign.

What these features usually do

  • Draft policies from a template and your inputs.
  • Suggest which evidence matches which control.
  • Answer security questionnaires from your policies and past answers.
  • Summarise findings or write remediation text.

Each is a drafting aid. None replaces a decision by someone who knows how your company works.

Questions to ask

Data handling. What data goes to the model? Is customer or evidence content included? Is it used to train a model? Where is it processed? Get the answers in writing, and compare with your own policy on AI use.

Grounding. Does a drafted answer point to the policy or evidence it came from? An answer you cannot trace is an answer you cannot check.

Review step. Is there an enforced review before an AI draft becomes an approved policy or a sent answer? Can you require a named approver?

Failure handling. What happens when the model is unsure? Does it say so, or invent a plausible answer?

Audit trail. Is it recorded which text was drafted by AI, who edited it, and who approved it?

Where the real risk sits

The worst failure is a confident, specific, wrong statement. A questionnaire answer that says you encrypt all data at rest with a named method, when you do not, creates a false statement to a customer. Read AI drafted questionnaire answers review rules for a review process.

Policies are a quieter risk. An AI drafted policy describes a company that does not exist, with controls you do not run. An auditor will test against it. A policy you do not follow is a finding.

Test it with a known answer

In a trial, ask the tool to answer three questions where you know the truth, including one where the correct answer is "we do not do this." See whether it admits the gap or fills it in. This single test tells you a lot.

When to skip the feature

If your volume is low, a person drafting from a maintained answer library may be as fast and more accurate. The value of AI drafting rises with questionnaire volume and the quality of your source documents.

Keep a human in the loop

Treat AI output as a first draft from a junior colleague who has read your documents but never worked at your company. Assign each draft to a named reviewer, and give that person the source material beside it. Reviewers who see only the draft tend to approve it.

Quick check

Can I send an AI drafted questionnaire answer without review?

You should not. A wrong claim to a customer is your responsibility.

What is a useful test of an AI feature?

Ask a question where the honest answer is no and see whether the tool says so.
