A KuppingerCole Leadership Compass surveys an IT market segment and identifies its leaders, as a compass for navigating the market. It uses four leadership categories, Product, Market, Innovation and Overall, each with three tiers: Leaders, Challengers and Followers. KuppingerCole says it is not sufficient on its own for choosing a vendor.
The four leader types
KuppingerCole's methodology page defines them as follows.
- Product/Service Leaders offer mature, leading-edge products that deliver most of the capabilities expected in a segment.
- Market Leaders have a large global customer base and a strong partner network.
- Innovation Leaders drive the segment's most innovative features.
- Overall Leaders carry a combined rating of product strength, market presence and innovation. They may have minor weaknesses but are generally above average.
Three tiers in each
Each category has Leaders, who are exceptionally strong in certain areas, Challengers, who are not yet Leaders but have specific strengths that could get them there, and Followers, who lag in some areas but may suit particular use cases.
The page notes most ratings apply to a specific product in a specific market segment, not to the vendor as a whole. A vendor can look different across segments because different products are rated.
Why four views help
A single leader label hides trade-offs. A small vendor can be an innovation leader without a global partner network. A large vendor can lead on market presence with a slower product. For a buyer in a regulated sector, a strong market footprint may matter. For a team with an unusual stack, innovation may matter more.
KuppingerCole's own page suggests the use: shortlist with the tiers and ratings, map your requirements to each product, consider Followers or Challengers when they match a niche well, and validate before deciding.
What to read next to the chart
- The segment definition. What is in and out of the market?
- The inclusion note. The page says some vendors are left out for limited market visibility, declining to participate, insufficient information or only marginal overlap, and uncovered vendors go in a vendors to watch chapter.
- The rating details for the product you are considering.
A worked example of choosing a view
A regulated bank with a global footprint may weight Market leadership because it wants a vendor with a partner network and a long customer base. A fast-moving product company with a modern stack may weight Innovation because it wants features other vendors lack. The chart can serve both buyers if each reads a different view.
Write your weighting before you open the report, so the chart does not set your priorities for you.
Quick check
Is an Overall Leader perfect?
No. The page says Overall Leaders may have minor weaknesses but are generally above average.
Do ratings describe the whole vendor?
Most apply to the specific product and market segment, not the vendor as a whole.
