Subscription, API or enterprise: which is cheaper for a small team

A decision guide with a worked example for a five person team, using published seat prices and API list prices, and one rule that tells you when a seat beats paying per token.

For a team of five developers, the cheaper option depends on one number the vendors do not publish: how much usage a seat includes, measured in list price dollars. This guide shows how to decide without that number, using prices fetched on 18 October 2026 from Anthropic's pages and a labelled scenario you can change.

Everything in the worked example is an estimate of list price for a made up usage pattern. It is not what any vendor spends and not a prediction of your bill.

The three options

OptionHow you payWhere it can hurt
Individual or team seatFlat monthly price per seat. Claude Team standard is $25 a seat monthly or $20 on annual billing. Pro is $20 monthly or $17 on annual billingLimits reset on a five hour window with weekly limits on top, in amounts the vendor does not publish in tokens. Past the limit, usage credits bill at standard API rates
APIPer million tokens at list price, with caching and batch discountsNo ceiling. Heavy agent sessions grow with the square of the turns, as our session estimator shows
EnterpriseClaude Enterprise is $20 a seat a month billed annually, 20 seat minimum, with usage billed at API ratesYou pay a seat fee on top of the API bill, in exchange for admin controls and data terms

The one rule

Because usage past a seat's allowance bills at API rates, a seat plan beats pure API only when the seat includes more than its own price in list price usage.

Seat wins if: allowance in list price dollars is greater than the seat price.

For a $25 seat, the seat has to cover more than $25 of API list price a month for that person. You can test that against your own history: in a plan with a usage meter, compare what you consume with what the API would have charged for the same sessions.

Worked example: five developers

Assumptions, all changeable:

  • 5 developers, 22 working days a month.
  • Each runs 3 agent sessions a day (40 turns each) and 10 short chats.
  • List price per session on Claude Sonnet 5.5 with caching, from our estimator: $0.917 per agent session, $0.068 per chat.
  • Seat: Claude Team standard at $25 monthly.

Run this:

# Inputs you can change. Session costs come from the calculator in our estimator post.
devs = 5
agent_sessions_per_dev_day = 3
chat_sessions_per_dev_day = 10
workdays = 22
agent_cost, chat_cost = 0.917, 0.068     # list price per session, Sonnet 5.5, cached (estimates)
seat_price = 25 # Claude Team standard seat, monthly billing, USD

usage_per_dev = workdays * (agent_sessions_per_dev_day * agent_cost + chat_sessions_per_dev_day * chat_cost)
api_total = devs * usage_per_dev
print(f"API list price per dev per month: ${usage_per_dev:,.2f} team: ${api_total:,.2f}")

# What if a seat covers some of that usage? Allowance is unknown, so try several values.
for allowance in (0, 40, 80, 120):
    overage = devs * max(0, usage_per_dev - allowance)
    total = devs * seat_price + overage
    cheaper = "seat plan" if total < api_total else "API"
    print(f"seat covers ${allowance:>3} of usage per dev -> seats + overage ${total:8,.2f}   vs API ${api_total:8,.2f}   cheaper: {cheaper}")

Output:

API list price per dev per month: $75.48 team: $377.41
seat covers $ 0 of usage per dev -> seats + overage $ 502.41 vs API $ 377.41 cheaper: API
seat covers $ 40 of usage per dev -> seats + overage $ 302.41 vs API $ 377.41 cheaper: seat plan
seat covers $ 80 of usage per dev -> seats + overage $ 125.00 vs API $ 377.41 cheaper: seat plan
seat covers $120 of usage per dev -> seats + overage $ 125.00 vs API $ 377.41 cheaper: seat plan

The allowance values are what ifs, not published figures. The pattern is the useful part: the seat plan loses only if it covers less than $25 of list price usage per developer.

What the example leaves out

  • A seat plan covers that vendor's models and apps. The API lets you mix vendors and models by task. Haiku 5.5 lists at $0.10 input and $0.50 output per million tokens for prompts up to 100,000 tokens, against $2 and $10 for Sonnet 5.5, so routing simple tasks to a small model can cut the API line sharply.
  • Limits stop work, not just bills. If your team hits a five hour window mid task, the cost is time.
  • Enterprise is not available to five people on Anthropic's page, which sets a 20 seat minimum. At 20 developers on the same usage the arithmetic is 20 seats at $20 plus 20 times $75.48 of API rate usage, so the seat fee is a small share of the total. You choose Enterprise for SSO, audit logs and data terms, not for price.
  • Batch processing takes 50 percent off on Anthropic's API for work that can wait, such as overnight scans.

A short decision guide

  1. Fewer than a handful of seats and interactive use: start with seats, and measure your usage against the API list price.
  2. Automated or scripted workloads: the API, with caching and batch.
  3. A requirement for SSO, audit logs, retention or residency controls: check the Enterprise and Team pages first, because the requirement may decide it.
  4. Mixed team: seats for people, API for pipelines.

If your security tooling runs on Safeguard, you can bring your own model, and MCP tool calls are unlimited, so you can change the model plan without changing the tool plan.

Quick check

When does a seat plan beat the API for one person?

When the seat includes more than its own price in API list price usage, because usage beyond the seat bills at API rates anyway.

Why is Enterprise not a price decision for five people?

Anthropic's page sets a 20 seat minimum, and its main differences are admin controls and data terms.
