What drives SOC 2 cost and timeline?

SOC 2 cost and timeline depend on scope, report type, control maturity and evidence habits. Here are the drivers to size before you ask for quotes.

SOC 2 cost and timeline are driven by scope, report type, how mature your controls already are, and how well you collect evidence. We give no price figures here because published numbers vary widely and the sources we checked did not support one. Size the drivers first, then ask auditors for quotes in writing.

What is SOC 2?

SOC 2 is one of the System and Organization Controls offerings that certified public accountants can provide, according to the AICPA. The AICPA sets the professional standards for these engagements. A SOC 2 report is written by a CPA firm, not by a software tool. The trust services categories are security, availability, processing integrity, confidentiality and privacy, and you choose which apply to your services.

SOC 2 reports come as Type 1, which looks at the design of controls at a point in time, and Type 2, which also tests whether they operated over a period. Secondary sources describe Type 2 observation periods of several months. Confirm the period with your auditor, since we did not fetch an AICPA statement of it.

What drives cost?

Scope. Every system, location and team in scope adds testing. A single product with one cloud account costs less effort than five products across several providers.

Categories chosen. Security is the baseline. Each extra category adds criteria and evidence.

Report type. A Type 2 covers more testing than a Type 1 and requires a period of operation.

Control maturity. Teams with written policies, enforced access reviews and tracked changes need less remediation. Teams starting from scratch pay in engineering time, which is often the largest cost and appears on no auditor invoice.

Evidence process. If evidence is gathered by screenshot at audit time, expect delays and rework. If it is collected continuously, the audit is smoother.

Tooling. Compliance automation platforms, penetration tests, security training and background checks may be added costs. Whether they are needed depends on your gaps.

Auditor and engagement terms. Firms differ in approach and fees. Ask what is included, how many requests you will receive, and what a retest costs.

What drives timeline?

Readiness work comes first. A gap assessment tells you what to build, and building access controls, logging and change management takes real calendar time. Then the observation window for a Type 2 must run, during which controls must operate consistently. Finally comes fieldwork and report drafting, where auditor queries and your response speed matter.

The usual delays are not technical. They are decisions waiting on a manager, access reviews nobody owns, and vendor questionnaires that arrive late.

Where does software supply chain work show up?

Auditors commonly ask how you manage vulnerabilities, changes and third-party risk. A current inventory of components, dated vulnerability findings and records of fixes are useful evidence. Safeguard's compliance automation can help gather such evidence. It does not make you compliant, and Safeguard does not issue SOC 2 reports.

What to do

  1. Decide which systems and categories are in scope and write the boundary down.
  2. Run a gap assessment before you request audit quotes.
  3. Fix the gaps and begin collecting evidence continuously.
  4. Ask at least two auditors for scoped quotes in writing, including retest terms.
  5. Name an internal owner for each control and for audit requests.
  6. Plan the observation period and avoid major system changes during it.

Quick check

Can a tool give me a SOC 2 report?

No. A CPA firm issues the report. Tools help you prepare and collect evidence.

Is Type 1 or Type 2 faster?

Type 1 is usually faster because it does not need an operating period, but customers often ask for Type 2. Ask your customers what they require.
