Should developers use a separate browser profile for dev work?

A dedicated browser profile keeps work logins, history and passwords apart from personal browsing. What it separates, what to verify, and a setup list.

Yes, it is a cheap habit that limits what any one browser session can reach. Chrome's documentation says profiles keep bookmarks, history, passwords and other settings separate. A dedicated profile for work and admin consoles keeps casual browsing, and whatever you install there, away from your cloud and code accounts.

What a profile separates

Google's Chrome help says that with profiles you can keep all your Chrome info separate, like bookmarks, history, passwords and other settings, and that deleting a profile erases those from the computer. The page does not describe extensions, so do not assume. Open your extensions page while each profile is active and confirm what is installed in which one.

Why developers benefit

Your browser holds sessions to code hosts, cloud consoles, package registries and issue trackers. An extension with broad page access can read pages in the profile where it is installed. Keeping those sessions in a profile with few or no extensions shrinks the exposure. See audit Chrome extension permissions in five minutes and browser extension supply chain attacks.

A profile is not a sandbox. Profiles on the same computer run as the same operating system user, so it separates data in the browser, not the machine.

A simple profile plan

ProfileUseExtensions
Work adminCloud consoles, code host, registries, SSOAs few as possible; only approved ones
Work generalDocs, mail, researchApproved set
PersonalEverything elseYour choice

Steps

  1. Create a new profile and name it clearly, for example Work admin.
  2. Sign in to your company identity only there.
  3. Install only the extensions you actually need, and check each one's permissions.
  4. Set the profile as the one you open admin tools from, and pin the bookmarks there.
  5. Use a password manager rather than the browser's saved passwords where your company provides one.
  6. Review the extension list monthly, and remove what you do not use.

Teams can go further with managed browsers and allow lists. See approve a browser extension for your company.

Limits worth stating

A separate profile does not help if you sign in to the same accounts everywhere, copy tokens between profiles, or run untrusted code on the same machine. Treat it as one layer next to MFA, short lived sessions and careful installs.

Safeguard also ships a Chrome and Edge extension, and a Firefox add-on, in addition to desktop, CLI and IDE tools. A free scan is at gold.safeguard.sh/scan.

Quick check

Do separate profiles stop malware on my computer?

No. They separate browser data. Software running as your operating system user can still read files from both.

Do I need a separate browser instead?

Not necessarily. A different profile gives much of the benefit. A different browser adds another layer if you want it.
