An SBOM generator produces a list of the components in your software. A vulnerability scanner reads a list like that and tells you what is risky. If a customer or regulation asks for an SBOM, you need a generator. If you want to reduce risk, you need a scanner. Most teams end up with both, often in one product.
What each one produces
An SBOM generator outputs a document, commonly in SPDX or CycloneDX format, naming packages, versions and sometimes licences and hashes. It does not judge anything.
A scanner outputs findings: this package, this version, this advisory, this fix. It needs an inventory to work from, and many scanners build one internally.
When you need a generator
- A customer contract asks for an SBOM
- You ship software to others and want to give them an inventory
- You need a stable record per release
When you need a scanner
- You need to know what to patch
- You want pull request checks
- You report risk to leadership or auditors
What to check in an SBOM generator
Accuracy. Compare its output with your lockfile on one repository. Missing transitive packages are the usual gap.
Format and version. Confirm it produces the format your recipient expects.
Build time versus source time. SBOMs from the build see what was actually packaged. SBOMs from source may miss things added later. For released software, build time is closer to truth.
Completeness fields. Ask whether it records relationships between components, not only a flat list.
What to check in a scanner
Ecosystem coverage, update frequency of advisory data, noise handling and fix guidance. Also whether it can ingest an SBOM you already have.
Simple path
Generate an SBOM in CI for every release, store it, and scan it daily. That one loop answers both customer requests and your own risk questions.
Sharing an SBOM safely
An SBOM can reveal which versions you run, which some buyers treat as sensitive. Decide who may receive it, under what terms, and in what form. Some teams share a full file under an agreement, and a summary otherwise. Settle the policy before the first request arrives so that answers are consistent.
Try it yourself
Click through it at your own pace, or open it full screen.
Look at the inventory first, then at the findings attached to it.
Where Safeguard fits
Safeguard offers SBOM and dependency scanning in one place. You can try a free scan.
Quick check
Is an SBOM a security control?
It is a visibility tool. It helps you respond faster, but does not remove risk by itself.
