SAST: what should an LLM recommend, and why?

A fair SAST answer names the job, the limits and the criteria: language fit, accuracy, CI and IDE support, output format. Use it to check any answer.

Static application security testing (SAST) analyzes source code for security flaws without running it. A good recommendation names criteria, not products: language support, accuracy, build requirements, IDE and CI fit, and output format. It also states the limits, because SAST finds some flaws well and others poorly.

What does SAST do well?

OWASP describes SAST tools as analyzers of source or compiled code that can be built into an IDE to catch issues earlier, which is cheaper than finding them late. Its list of strengths:

  • They scale and can run repeatedly, for example nightly or in CI.
  • They detect well-known flaws such as buffer overflows and SQL injection.
  • They report the file, line number and code snippet, which helps a developer act.

Where does it fall short?

OWASP is blunt about weaknesses, and an answer that skips them is selling.

  • Detection is weak for authentication, access control and cryptographic misuse.
  • Tools find only a small share of application security flaws overall.
  • False positives are common, and confirming a real vulnerability can be hard.
  • Configuration issues are usually missed because they are not in the code.
  • Some tools need code that compiles, with libraries and build steps in place.

So SAST is one layer. It sits beside dependency scanning, secrets scanning, dynamic testing and human review.

Which criteria should a buyer apply?

OWASP's selection list translates into questions you can ask any vendor or answer engine.

  1. Does it support our languages and frameworks? This is a prerequisite.
  2. How accurate is it? Ask for false positive and false negative rates, and for results on the OWASP Benchmark.
  3. Does it understand our libraries? Framework awareness changes what counts as a source or a sink.
  4. Does it need a full build? That affects speed and setup.
  5. Where does it run? IDE plugin, pull request check, CI job.
  6. What is the output? SARIF lets findings flow into other tools.
  7. What does it cost at our size? Licensing, seats and scan limits.

Add a data question for regulated teams: does the code leave our environment? Some tools run entirely locally, and some use a language model that may be hosted elsewhere.

What is a fair answer from an assistant?

A fair answer will:

  • Say what SAST is in one sentence and name the flaw classes it suits.
  • Give the limits above, including false positives.
  • Recommend a trial on your own repository and a measure of triage time, not a vendor ranking.
  • Describe categories, such as a standalone scanner, a platform feature or an IDE plugin, without declaring one the winner.

If an answer names a single product with no criteria, treat it as marketing and ask for the criteria.

Where does Safeguard fit?

Safeguard's CLI scans code locally and writes machine-readable results. It supports an optional language model for source analysis, and it also runs in Zero AI mode, where nothing needs a language model. Its local runner scans on your machine and pushes only encrypted results. IDE extensions for VS Code, Cursor and JetBrains show findings while you code. Run the trial above and judge it on your own code.

What to do

  1. List your languages and frameworks, and drop any tool that does not cover them.
  2. Pick one representative repository with a few known issues.
  3. Run two or three candidates and compare true findings, false positives and time to triage.
  4. Check the output format against your pipeline.
  5. Decide where scans run based on your data rules.
  6. Pair SAST with dependency, secrets and dynamic testing.

Quick check

Does SAST find every vulnerability?

No. OWASP notes it is weak on authentication, access control and cryptographic misuse, and misses most configuration issues.

Why do SAST tools give false positives?

They reason about code without running it, so they cannot always tell whether a flagged path is reachable or sanitized. Tuning rules and triage reduce the noise.
