How to review an automated fix pull request on a small screen

What to check before approving a dependency fix pull request from your phone, and when to wait for a laptop. A short, practical review routine.

You can review a dependency fix pull request on a phone if the change is small and the checks are green. Read the title, the diff size, the files touched and the test results, then decide. If the diff is large or touches sensitive code, wait for a larger screen.

Know what produced the PR

Safeguard can open fix pull requests as part of autonomous remediation. This is off by default, and every category starts on Manual, so a human decides what is allowed to proceed. If you see a fix PR, someone on your team switched that on for some category of change. Know which, because it tells you what the PR is expected to contain.

The Safeguard iOS listing says the app lets you track remediation as fixes are authored, validated and merged. Tracking is the safe phone job. Approving is the decision that needs more care.

The small screen review

  1. Title and description. Does it say which package and from what version to what version?
  2. Diff size. A lockfile and manifest bump is a few lines. Hundreds of lines means more than a bump.
  3. Files touched. Expect manifests and lockfiles. Be suspicious of source files, build scripts or CI configuration changing in a dependency fix.
  4. Version jump. A patch or minor bump is lower risk than a major version. Major jumps can break APIs.
  5. Checks. Are tests, build and any security gate green? A red check is a stop.
  6. Fix evidence. Does the PR say which vulnerability it addresses and whether it is reachable in your code?

Approve, wait or reject

  • Approve a one line patch bump on a non critical service with green checks and a reachable vulnerability that is now fixed.
  • Wait when the diff is big, the version jump is major, or the service is critical.
  • Reject or ask when files that should not change did change, or checks fail.

Things a phone hides

Small screens collapse context. You might miss a changed build script, a renamed file or a new dependency added alongside the fix. If anything about the PR looks unexpected, open it on a larger screen. It costs nothing to wait until morning for a non urgent fix.

Two person rule for sensitive code

For authentication, payments, or deployment code, require a second reviewer regardless of who or what authored the change. Branch protection can enforce this, and a policy gate can block merges that fail your security checks. Setting those up once means a tired approval cannot bypass them.

After the merge

Check the deploy went through, and that the finding closes on the next scan. A fix that merged but did not deploy is still a vulnerability in production. Watch the finding status rather than assuming.

Quick check

Does autonomous remediation merge changes by itself?

It is off by default, and every category starts on Manual. What it may do is set by your administrators, so check your own settings.

What is the biggest red flag in a dependency fix PR?

Changes outside manifests and lockfiles, such as build scripts or CI configuration. A bump should not need them.
