NIST 800-53 PE-13 Fire Protection: Detection and Suppression Evidence

PE-13 requires fire detection and suppression supported by an independent energy source. What to keep and the enhancements to know.

Fire is the classic physical threat to a server room. NIST SP 800-53 Rev 5 control PE-13 Fire Protection asks you to employ and maintain fire detection and suppression systems that are supported by an independent energy source.

800-53 binds US federal systems and, through contract, some suppliers. For other companies it is a reference. If your systems live at a cloud or colocation provider, you rely on their evidence. If you run a server closet, this is yours.

What it means in practice

The guidance mentions sprinklers and smoke detectors as examples of systems that may need an independent energy source, such as a microgrid separate from the main supply. The point is that fire protection must keep working when the building power fails, which is often when a fire starts.

Fire protection in an ordinary office usually follows local fire code. Your task is to show that it covers your equipment space and that someone maintains it.

Evidence to collect

  • Inspection certificates for alarms, sprinklers and extinguishers.
  • Maintenance logs and dates of last service.
  • Documentation of the backup power for the detection system.
  • The fire plan and evacuation procedure.
  • Provider audit reports for hosted environments.

Common gaps

Certificates are expired. A server room uses water sprinklers with no consideration for the equipment. The detector battery has never been checked.

How to implement it

Ask your landlord or facility manager for current inspection records. Confirm detectors reach the server room. Keep copies with the date. Review once a year.

The enhancements add detail. PE-13.1 Detection Systems, Automatic Activation and Notification wants alarms that notify personnel and emergency responders. PE-13.2 Suppression Systems, Automatic Activation and Notification does the same for suppression. PE-13.4 Inspections requires periodic inspection by authorized parties. PE-13.3 Automatic Fire Suppression is withdrawn in Rev 5.

Quick check

What does an independent energy source mean?

A source separate from, or separable from, the power that feeds the facility, so detection and suppression work in an outage.

Does a rented office need its own records?

You need copies of the landlord's inspection records for the space that houses your equipment.
