How do you write an IDE security warning developers act on?

An IDE security warning works when it names the risk, the location, and the next step in one glance. Here is a message template and what to cut.

An IDE security warning gets acted on when it says what is wrong, where, why it matters in one sentence, and what to do next, all without leaving the editor. Cut jargon, cut scores nobody asked for, and put the fix action next to the message.

What a developer sees in two seconds

An editor warning competes with compiler errors, linters and a half-written function. The reader gives it a glance. If the glance does not answer "is this mine, is it real, what do I click," the warning becomes background color.

That is a design problem, not a discipline problem. Here is a four part message that fits in a hover.

  1. Risk in plain words. "This query is built from user input, so it can be injected."
  2. Location. The exact line or dependency, underlined where the problem lives.
  3. Why here. One short clause tying it to this code: "The value comes from the request body on line 41."
  4. Next step. A quick action: apply the suggested fix, open the safe pattern, or mark as not applicable with a reason.

Before and after

Weak messageBetter message
"CWE-89 detected, severity High""User input reaches this SQL string. Use a parameterized query. Quick fix available."
"Vulnerable dependency found""lodash 4.17.15 is flagged. Version 4.17.21 fixes it. Update in package.json."
"Possible issue, review needed""This secret-like string is in a test file. Mark as test data or remove it."

The weak versions are accurate. They are also homework. The better versions do the first step of the work for the reader.

What to leave out of the hover

  • Raw scores with no context. A number without a verdict is noise.
  • Long advisory text. Link to it, do not paste it.
  • Findings the developer cannot influence, such as a transitive package three levels deep with no available fix. Show those in a panel, not as red underlines in the code.
  • Repeats. One underline per root cause, not one per call site.

Respect the editor

Three small rules protect trust.

Do not move the cursor or steal focus. A warning that interrupts typing teaches people to turn the extension off.

Make dismissal cheap and honest. Offer a short list of reasons, such as not reachable, test code, or accepted risk, and keep the choice visible to reviewers. A silent ignore with no reason is a future audit question.

Match the pull request. If the IDE says something is fine and the pull request check later disagrees, developers stop believing the IDE. Use the same rules and the same wording in both places. Our post on IDE, pull request, build and proxy scanning explains why the layers should agree.

Test the wording

Pick five real findings from your backlog and show the messages to two developers who have never seen the tool. Ask them to say, out loud, what they would do next. If they hesitate, rewrite the message and try again. This takes an hour and tells you more than a satisfaction survey.

Safeguard offers extensions for VS Code, JetBrains and Open VSX, plus a CLI, so findings can show up where the code is written and match what the pull request gate reports. The free scan at gold.safeguard.sh/scan gives a quick look at the wording on your own repository.

Quick check

Should every IDE warning include a severity score?

Not by default. Severity helps order work, but the message should lead with the risk and the next step. Show the score in the details panel.

How many warnings are too many in one file?

There is no fixed number. If a developer cannot tell which one to fix first, group by root cause or show only the top few and link to the rest.
