Read a vendor's analyst claim as the vendor's summary, not the analyst's verdict. Check the report title, date, market and product version, then ask for the original reprint. Gartner's own reprint rules ban implying endorsement, so wording that sounds like one deserves a question.
What the rules say
Gartner publishes a content compliance checklist for vendors who license reprints. Items relevant to you as a reader:
- Quotes must be exact, with no paraphrasing, and attributed with the content title, authors and publication date if not otherwise clear.
- Only industry-general quotes are allowed. A vendor may not quote text that names a company or product or gives information about a specific one.
- Charts and graphics must not be altered or highlighted with arrows or colors.
- A vendor promoting inclusion must carry a disclaimer that Gartner does not endorse any vendor and that research reflects opinion, not fact.
- Inclusion must not be presented as an award or imply a partnership or endorsement. Messaging should be presented as the vendor's opinion.
- Vendors must not criticize others or compare Gartner content with other analyst firms.
The checklist also notes that the 30 percent content limit does not apply to landing pages, emails, press releases, blogs or social posts.
Wording to question
- "Named a leader." In what market, in which report, on what date, and for which product version?
- "Recognized by analysts." Recognition is not a rating. Ask for the specific statement.
- "Top rated" or "highest scoring." Compared with whom? Reprint rules bar competitive comparisons, so a ranking claim should come from the report text itself.
- A paraphrased quote. Exact quotes are required, so a paraphrase suggests the vendor is stretching, or the content is not from a licensed reprint.
- An edited chart. Altering graphics is not allowed under the rules above.
A five-question checklist
- What is the full report title and publication date?
- Which market or category does it cover, and does that match what you are buying?
- Is the product version evaluated still the one you would receive?
- Can you read the original reprint, including the disclaimer?
- What does the report say about weaknesses or cautions for this product?
The fifth question is the useful one. Reports usually contain cautions, and vendors rarely quote them. A vendor that volunteers them is showing confidence.
Keep your own use compliant
Analyst content is licensed. If you want to share report content internally, check your license terms first, and share your own conclusions rather than excerpts.
Safeguard provides SBOM and dependency scanning, policy gates and a free scan at gold.safeguard.sh/scan, so claims can be tested on your repository.
Quick check
If a vendor shows a placement graphic, is it official?
Only if it matches the original unaltered chart and the required disclaimer is present. Ask for the reprint.
Is a logo badge proof of a good rating?
No. A badge shows that a vendor is covered, not how it scored.
