How to choose an SSPM tool or service: buyer criteria

SaaS security posture management checks your SaaS settings for drift. Use these buyer criteria on coverage, fixes, evidence and cost. No vendor ranking.

Choose SSPM by what it covers, how it finds problems, and what happens next. SaaS security posture management checks the settings of your SaaS apps, such as sharing, sign-in and integrations, against a baseline. Test it on your own apps, ask for the fix path, and be wary of any tool that claims to cover everything.

What does SSPM actually do?

It connects to SaaS apps through their APIs, reads configuration, and flags settings that drift from a secure baseline. Baselines exist publicly. CISA's SCuBA project provides secure configuration baselines for Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace, and no-cost assessment tools, ScubaGear and ScubaGoggles, that check a tenant against them. CISA started SCuBA in 2022 to address gaps exposed by SaaS intrusions. These give you a useful yardstick when you evaluate any product.

Which criteria matter most?

Coverage of your apps. List the SaaS apps you actually run. A tool may cover two big suites in depth and a long tail shallowly. Ask for the list of supported apps and which checks exist per app, not a logo count.

Depth of checks. Ask whether it reads settings only, or also users, permissions, third-party app grants and sharing links.

Discovery of unsanctioned apps. Some tools find apps staff signed up for. Ask how, and what it misses.

Fix path. A finding that says "setting X is risky" is half the job. Does it give steps, create a ticket for the owner, or change the setting itself? If it can change settings, what approvals gate that?

Access it needs. The tool needs privileged read access to your SaaS. Ask what scopes it requests, how the credentials are stored and how you revoke them.

Baseline mapping. Check that findings map to baselines you recognize, such as SCuBA or your compliance framework, so evidence is reusable.

Alert quality. Ask for a trial on real tenants and count how many findings are real, duplicates or accepted risk.

Evidence and history. Can you export a dated record of posture for an auditor?

Tool or service?

A tool suits teams that will triage findings themselves. A managed service suits teams without SaaS admin capacity. In a service, ask who has access to your tenant, where data is stored and who makes changes.

What should you ask in a demo?

Bring a messy tenant. Ask the seller to show a finding from detection to closure, a permission grant by a third-party app, and how an exception is recorded with an owner and expiry. Ask what happens when an app changes its API.

What do buyers often get wrong?

They buy for the dashboard, not the workflow. They also forget that SaaS settings are owned by business teams, such as HR or sales operations, who need findings in language they understand. A tool nobody acts on only produces a list.

Another mistake is expecting SSPM to cover identity threats or data loss. Those are separate areas, and some products blend them. Ask for what is in scope in writing.

Where does application security fit?

Safeguard focuses on the application and software supply chain side. It does not replace SSPM. Your SaaS configuration and your code and dependencies are different risks, and you need an owner for each.

What to do

  1. List your SaaS apps and their owners.
  2. Run a free baseline assessment where one exists, as a reference point.
  3. Write your criteria from the list above and weight them.
  4. Trial two or three options on your own tenants.
  5. Test the fix path and the exception process.
  6. Review the access scopes with your security and legal teams before you sign.

Quick check

Do we need SSPM if we use only one big suite?

Possibly not. The suite's own security tools and public baselines may be enough. SSPM earns its keep as the number of apps and admins grows.

Is SSPM the same as a CASB?

They overlap but are not the same. SSPM focuses on configuration posture. Ask each vendor what its product covers in your terms.
