How do you evaluate an AI suggested security fix before merging?

Treat an AI suggested fix as an unreviewed patch from a stranger: confirm it removes the flaw, stays in scope, passes honest tests, and has a named owner.

Evaluate an AI suggested fix the way you would a patch from an unknown contributor. Confirm it removes the flaw rather than hiding it, check that the diff stays in scope, make sure the tests are independent of the fix, rescan, and keep a human owner accountable for the merge.

What counts as an AI suggested fix

Here, an AI suggested fix is any change an assistant or remediation tool proposes to close a known finding: a dependency bump, a code rewrite, a configuration edit. It may arrive as an IDE suggestion, a comment on a pull request, or a bot opened pull request.

The source does not change the review standard. A fix is only as good as the evidence that it works.

Five questions, in order

  1. Does it fix the root cause? Read the finding first, then the diff. The change should address the weakness class, not just the one line a scanner flagged.
  2. Is the diff the right size? Reviewers anchored on the stated task miss extra edits. OWASP's guidance on AI assisted coding calls out out-of-scope edits to lockfiles, CI configuration and unrelated tests as a common review failure.
  3. Are the tests honest? A green suite written by the same tool that wrote the fix proves little. The same OWASP guidance warns about deleted tests, weakened assertions and mocks that replace the code under test.
  4. Did a rescan agree? Run the scanner that raised the finding against the branch, and confirm the finding is gone and nothing new appeared.
  5. Who owns the merge? One named human approves and is on the hook if it breaks.

A quick scoring table

CheckPass looks likeStop sign
Root causeChange matches the weakness classOnly the flagged line changed, pattern remains elsewhere
ScopeFiles match the findingLockfile, CI or test edits nobody asked for
TestsNew test fails before the fix, passes afterTests deleted or assertions loosened
RescanFinding closed, no new findingsFinding moved or reappeared
OwnerCode owner approvedMerged by the tool or its requester alone

Why the extra care is warranted

Large language models produce plausible text, and plausible is not the same as correct. OWASP's cheat sheet on secure coding with AI notes that assistants may suggest package versions that were current in their training data but are now known to be vulnerable, and may not know about recent advisories. Treat every suggestion as a draft that needs checking against current data.

You do not need a slow process for every change. Match depth to blast radius. A patch level bump of a test-only package deserves a lighter touch than a rewrite of authentication code. The post on approval tiers for automated fix PRs shows one way to set that up.

Try it yourself

Click through it at your own pace, or open it full screen. Watch how a pull request is held until required checks pass, which is where several of the five questions can be enforced automatically.

Where Safeguard fits

Safeguard's autonomous remediation opens fix pull requests, is off by default, and has every category set to Manual. Policies and gates can hold a pull request until your checks pass. You can try a free scan at gold.safeguard.sh/scan.

Quick check

Is a passing CI run enough to merge an AI suggested fix?

No. CI shows the tests you have still pass. It does not show the flaw is gone, and the tests may have been edited alongside the fix.

Should every AI fix get the same review depth?

No. Scale review to risk: lighter for low risk dependency patches, heavier for authentication, cryptography, configuration and build pipeline changes.
