How Claude plan usage limits work: five hour and weekly windows

Claude plans meter usage in a five hour session plus a weekly limit, not a message count. What drives it, how to check it and what to do at the limit.

Claude subscription plans do not give you a fixed number of messages. Anthropic describes a session limit that resets every five hours and a weekly limit across all models. How far each goes depends on message length, attached files, conversation length and the model or feature you use.

What Anthropic says

Anthropic's Pro plan help article, read on 19 October 2026, states the following:

  • The session based limit resets every five hours.
  • A weekly limit applies across all models and resets at a fixed time assigned to your account. You can see your next reset in Settings, under Usage.
  • The number of messages depends on message length, the length of attached files, the length of your current conversation, and the model or feature.
  • Anthropic may impose other limits, such as weekly or monthly caps, to manage capacity.

The pricing page adds that Max offers a choice of 5x or 20x Pro usage per session, and that for Team plans "there's no fixed message count."

What burns usage fast

Anthropic's Claude Code cost documentation lists why a long session can use far more than you expect:

  • Long context. The full conversation is sent with every request, so a one line question late in a long session still draws on the whole history.
  • Cache misses. The first message after a break longer than the cache lifetime reprocesses the full context.
  • Scheduled tasks that fire on an interval while a session is idle.
  • Subagents and agent teammates, each sending their own requests. The page says agent teams use approximately 7 times more tokens than standard sessions when teammates run in plan mode.
  • Compaction, because summarizing a large context is itself a large request.

How to check where it went

Claude Code has a usage screen. For Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans it shows a breakdown of what counts against plan limits, such as skills, subagents and individual MCP servers, and flags behaviors such as long context or cache misses when they account for 10 percent or more of recent usage. The figures are approximate and computed from local session history on that machine, so usage on other devices is not included.

What to do at the limit

Options Anthropic describes:

  1. Wait for the reset. Newer Claude Code versions can wait and continue the interrupted task automatically.
  2. Turn on usage credits to keep working past the allowance. Pro and Max users can set a monthly spend limit for these credits.
  3. For model specific limit messages, switch to a model outside that family.

Habits that stretch an allowance

Clear the conversation between unrelated tasks, use a smaller model for simple work, and write specific prompts. See reduce Claude Code token usage: a checklist.

Quick check

Do all my Claude surfaces share one limit?

For Team and Enterprise, Anthropic's documentation says the seat allowance is shared across Claude chat, Claude Code and Cowork. For individual plans, check the help center for the current rule.

Is the weekly limit the same day for everyone?

No. The help article says it resets at a fixed time assigned to your account.
