Google's Gemini help page says a subset of chats is reviewed by human reviewers, including trained service providers. Reviewed chats are kept for up to three years, and deleting your activity does not remove them. Chats are disconnected from your account before review, so treat content, not your name, as the risk.
What Google says
Three statements on the Gemini Apps help page matter here.
- A subset of chats is reviewed by human reviewers, including Google's trained service providers, to help improve services and protect users.
- Chats are disconnected from your account before being sent to service providers.
- Reviewed chats are kept for up to three years, and deleting your activity does not remove them.
The page also says: do not enter confidential information that you would not want a reviewer to see.
Why disconnection is not the whole answer
Removing the account link is a real step. It does not change what you typed. If you wrote your full name, an address, a diagnosis or a company secret in the chat, that text is the identifying part.
So the practical rule is simple. Write prompts as if a stranger could read them, because for a small share of chats, one might.
What reduces the chance
Google describes two modes that exclude chats from human review used to improve its AI. Temporary Chats are excluded. With Keep Activity off, chats are not used to train models unless you submit feedback, and are still held for 72 hours. Google adds that it still processes chats to respond and protect users, with help from human reviewers.
That means no mode removes human involvement entirely. The modes limit improvement use and history.
Habits that work
- Strip details. Say "a 40 year old with a chronic condition" rather than naming anyone.
- Use placeholders for names, accounts and places, then fill them in yourself afterward.
- Use Temporary Chat for sensitive questions.
- Do not upload documents you would not hand to a contractor.
- Skip the feedback button on conversations that contain personal material, since feedback is an exception to the no-training promise.
Quick check
If I delete my Gemini activity, are reviewed chats deleted too?
Not according to Google. Its page says reviewed chats are kept for up to three years and deleting activity does not remove them.
Does human review know who I am?
Google says chats are disconnected from your account before they go to service providers. The text of the chat can still contain identifying details.
