Free SBOM tools vs paid platforms: when free is genuinely enough

An honest look at when free SBOM tools meet your needs and when a paid platform saves real time: team size, product count, audits and customer requests.

Free SBOM tools are genuinely enough when you ship a few products, need files for customers, and have an engineer who will maintain the pipeline. Paid platforms save time when you manage many repositories, need continuous matching against new advisories, or must give non-engineers access to the data.

Where free works well

For a small team, free generators produce valid, standard SBOMs and run in CI. If a customer asks for a CycloneDX or SPDX file with each release, you can meet that request without buying anything. Free tools are also good for learning what an SBOM contains before you decide what you need.

Where the hidden costs appear

The cost of a free tool is your time. Someone writes the pipeline steps, handles ecosystems that need special flags, validates output, stores files and builds any search across them. When a major advisory lands, you need to find affected products fast, and a folder of JSON files is slow to search. The effort is manageable at five repositories and painful at fifty.

Questions that decide it

How many products and repositories? How often do customers or auditors ask for SBOMs? Do you need to answer which products contain library X within an hour? Who besides engineers needs the data? Will you share SBOMs externally with access control? Count your honest yeses. Mostly no means free is fine. Mostly yes means price the build effort in people hours and compare.

A middle path

Start with free generation and keep SBOMs in a consistent location and naming scheme. Make sure whatever platform you consider later can ingest standard files, so you are not locked into a generator. Revisit the decision once a year or after the first painful advisory response. There is no shame in staying free if it keeps working.

It also helps to consider who is asking. A regulator or a large customer may care less about the tool and more about the process: how often you generate, how you validate, how you respond to advisories. A free tool inside a well documented process often satisfies them. A paid platform with no process does not. Process is the thing to build first, and tooling is how you make it cheaper to run.

Where Safeguard fits

Safeguard accepts SBOM and dependency scanning input and offers a free scan if you want to compare a generated SBOM with scan results.

Quick check

Will moving from free to paid mean regenerating everything?

Not if the platform ingests standard SBOM files. Check that before you commit.
