Deleting a Claude consumer account is permanent and you lose your saved chats. If you pay for Pro or Max, cancel the subscription and wait for the period to end first. Export your data beforehand, then go to Settings, Account, and click Delete Account.

Before you delete

Anthropic's privacy center covers Free, Pro and Max accounts, plus Claude Code accounts on those plans.

  1. Export your data. Deletion cannot be undone. See our post on exporting data for the steps and the 24 hour link.
  2. For paid accounts, cancel the subscription in Billing settings and wait until the current period ends. Only after it lapses can you delete.
  3. Unshare any shared chats under Settings, Privacy, Shared chats, so no old links linger.
  4. Note which services you reached Claude through. If you use Claude via a third party such as Poe or Slack, Anthropic says to request deletion from that third party instead.

The deletion steps

Log in, click your initials or name in the lower left, choose Settings, open the Account section, click Delete Account and follow the prompts.

Caveats

  • Some accounts cannot be deleted by self service. If that applies, your account shows a note and you must contact support.
  • If several accounts share one email address, you have to say which ones to delete when you make the request.
  • Banned users are not locked out of this. Anthropic says banned Free, Pro and Max users can log in to export data or delete their account, though what you can export may be restricted based on the violation.

What happens to the data

For how long data persists after deletion, Anthropic points to its retention article. The related retention page says deleted chats are removed from back-end storage within 30 days, with longer holding possible where the law, disputes or policy enforcement require it.

Should you delete at all?

Deleting the account is the strongest step, but it is not always needed. If your worry is training, switch off the model improvement setting. If your worry is a few old chats, delete those chats. If your worry is a link, unshare it. Keep account deletion for when you are done with the service.

Quick check

Can I delete a Pro account right away?

Not through the normal steps. Cancel the subscription and wait until the paid period ends, then delete.

Is deletion reversible?

No. Anthropic says it is permanent and you lose access to your saved chats, so export first.
