CVE-2026-57104 is a high severity (CVSS 8.8) cross-site scripting flaw in Azure Storage Explorer. The record says an unauthorized attacker can elevate privileges over a network. Update Storage Explorer to the version Microsoft names in its Security Update Guide entry.

What's affected

The record lists Azure Storage Explorer and gives no version range. The only reference is the Microsoft Security Update Guide entry, which needs JavaScript to display, so I could not read the fixed version for this post.

The CVSS vector is AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R with high impact on confidentiality, integrity and availability. A user must take an action, such as opening crafted content.

How to check if you're exposed

Storage Explorer is a desktop application, so exposure is per machine.

  • Open the application and use the About dialog to read the version.
  • Compare it with the fixed version in the Microsoft Security Update Guide entry.
  • Use your software inventory tool to find every machine that has it installed, including build servers and admin workstations.

What to do now

  1. Open the Microsoft Security Update Guide entry for CVE-2026-57104 and note the fixed version.
  2. Update Storage Explorer on every machine where it is installed.
  3. Remove it from machines that do not need it.
  4. Limit the storage accounts and roles that users sign in with to what they need.
  5. Be cautious with links and files that open inside the app.

Why it matters

The weakness is CWE-79, cross-site scripting. Content from an untrusted source is shown in the app without being neutralized, so script in it runs with the permissions of the user. Desktop apps built on web technology are exposed to this class just as websites are.

The impact grows with the user's rights. An administrator signed in to many storage accounts is a more valuable target. Least privilege limits the damage. The record is not in CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog.

Quick check

Is this a browser issue?

No. The record names Azure Storage Explorer, a desktop application. It shows content in a web style interface, which is why a web class flaw applies.
