CVE-2026-48687 is a critical OS command injection flaw (CVSS 9.8) in the Juniper router plugin of FastNetMon Community Edition through 1.2.9. A logging function puts unsanitized values into a shell command. The researcher reports the vendor shipped a fix in FastNetMon 2.0.380, so upgrade and review the plugin.
What's affected
FastNetMon Community Edition through 1.2.9, in the file src/juniper_plugin/fastnetmon_juniper.php, function _log(). The researcher reports that FastNetMon LTD responded on 27 May 2026 and shipped the fix in 2.0.380.
The record scores the issue 9.8, while the researcher's write up rates it 8.1. The plugin matters only if you use the Juniper integration script.
How to check if you're exposed
List FastNetMon installs and read the version. Community Edition through 1.2.9 is the stated range.
dpkg -l | grep -i fastnetmon
rpm -qa | grep -i fastnetmon
Also list who can send BGP, NetFlow, sFlow or IPFIX traffic to the collector.
Then check whether the Juniper notification script is configured as an attack handler in your FastNetMon settings.
What to do now
- Find FastNetMon installs and see whether the Juniper plugin script is in use.
- Upgrade to 2.0.380 or later.
- Check file permissions so that only trusted accounts can run or edit the plugin script.
- If you cannot upgrade, disable the Juniper plugin until you can.
Why it matters
The class is CWE-78, OS command injection. The function builds a shell command by joining a message string, made from the attack IP, direction and rate, onto an echo command run through the shell. Any shell special characters in those values would run as commands.
The record is honest about the limit: the C++ core currently passes IP addresses in a safe dotted form, so the data is clean today. The risk is in direct calls to the script, other tools that call it, or later code changes. That is why the injection pattern is worth fixing even when the current input looks safe. The record does not mark this CVE as exploited, and it is not on the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities list.
There is no package manifest to scan for this one, so inventory comes first. List every host, instance or device running an affected build. The Gold directory page for CVE-2026-48687 is a handy place to follow later updates.
Quick check
If the input is safe today, is this urgent?
It is less urgent than the memory flaws, but cheap to fix. Upgrading removes the pattern.
