CVE-2025-12531 is a High severity (CVSS 7.1) XML external entity injection flaw in IBM InfoSphere Information Server 11.7.0.0 through 11.7.1.6. IBM addressed it under APAR DT454196 with a security patch and updated versions. Apply the fix listed in IBM's bulletin for your level.

What's affected

IBM's security bulletin lists IBM InfoSphere Information Server 11.7.0.0 to 11.7.1.6 as affected. The flaw is in how the product handles XML data. IBM says a remote attacker could expose sensitive information or consume memory resources, which matches the confidentiality and availability impacts in the score.

Weakness class: CWE-611 (Improper Restriction of XML External Entity Reference).

IBM's own CVSS vector is CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:H, so the attacker needs a low-privilege account. The bulletin lists no workarounds or mitigations.

Fixed versions

The bulletin names APAR DT454196 and gives remediation steps for the 11.7.0.0 to 11.7.1.6 range, namely applying a specified 11.7.1.x version or the IBM security patch. The exact choice depends on your current level, so read the remediation table in the bulletin for your version rather than relying on a summary here.

How to check if you're exposed

  1. Find every InfoSphere Information Server installation in your environment, including development and test tiers.
  2. Read the installed version from the product's version information, or from the IBM installation manager on the server. Anything from 11.7.0.0 up to 11.7.1.6 is in scope.
  3. Check IBM's bulletin to see whether your level already has the security patch applied, and compare your installed fix list against APAR DT454196.
  4. Note which services accept XML from other systems or from users, as these are the paths the flaw relates to.

What to do now

  1. Apply the remediation IBM lists for your level, either the named version or the security patch for APAR DT454196.
  2. Because IBM lists no workaround, do not count on configuration changes alone while you wait.
  3. Limit who has accounts on the platform, since the score vector assumes a low-privilege account.
  4. Restrict network access to the server tiers to the systems that need them.
  5. Subscribe to IBM security bulletins for the product so the next fix reaches you quickly.

Why it matters

XML can include references to external resources, and a parser that follows them without limits can be made to read files or consume memory when it processes input from an untrusted source. The standard fix is to turn off external entity resolution in the XML parser and to reject documents that declare entities when they are not needed.

Data integration platforms hold credentials and connection details for many other systems, so a flaw that exposes information from such a server can have effects beyond the server itself. The record shows no sign of exploitation in the wild and the CVE is not in the CISA KEV catalog.
