Copilot plan or API for a five person security team?

Using GitHub's published prices (fetched 18 Oct 2026), five Business seats cost 95 dollars a month with credits included. Compare that with direct API use.

For a five person security team, GitHub Copilot Business is 19 dollars per seat per month, so 95 dollars a month for five, with AI credits included. A direct model API charges only for usage and needs you to build the tooling. This post uses GitHub prices fetched on 18 October 2026.

What does Copilot cost today?

From GitHub's plans page and documentation on 18 October 2026:

  • Pro: 10 dollars per month, with 1,500 AI credits in total (a 10 dollar base plus a 5 dollar flex allotment).
  • Pro+: 39 dollars, 7,000 credits.
  • Max: 100 dollars, 20,000 credits.
  • Business: 19 dollars per granted seat per month, 1,900 credits per user per month.
  • Enterprise: 39 dollars per granted seat per month, 3,900 credits per user per month.

The page states that one AI credit equals 0.01 US dollars, and that flex allotments may change over time. These pages have moved from an older model of premium requests to credits, so figures you saw last year may be out of date.

What is five seats worth?

Five Business seats are 95 dollars a month. At the published rate, 1,900 credits per seat is worth 19 dollars of usage per seat, so the seat price and the credit value match on Business. Five Enterprise seats are 195 dollars a month, with 3,900 credits per seat.

GitHub's documentation says usage beyond the shared enterprise pool is charged at 0.01 dollars per credit, and that owners and billing managers can set budgets at user, organization, cost center and enterprise level. The page did not say whether a budget acts as a hard cap, and the pages I read did not say what happens when credits run out, so confirm that with GitHub before you rely on it.

When does the seat plan fit?

When the work is mostly in the editor and the pull request: reading unfamiliar code, writing detection rules and scripts, explaining a diff. Seats give predictable monthly cost and administration inside your existing GitHub organization.

It fits less well when your usage is lumpy. Security teams often have quiet weeks and an incident week with heavy use.

When does a direct API fit?

When you want to wire a model into your own workflows: a triage bot that reads alerts, a script that summarizes advisories, a pipeline step that reviews configuration. You pay for what you use, you choose the model, and you control where data goes. You also own the prompts, the guardrails, logging, secrets handling and upkeep.

We have not fetched API price lists for this post. Take the current per million token prices from your provider's page on the day you decide, and apply them to a measured sample of your own tasks.

How do you compare fairly?

Measure first. For two weeks, record what each person does with AI help: how many sessions, how long, what tasks. Pick three representative tasks and run each through both routes.

Then compare four costs: seat or token charges, engineering time to build and maintain tooling, review time for output you must check, and the risk cost of where data flows. People often compare only the first.

Remember also that these are not exclusive. Many teams use seats for editor work and an API for a few automated jobs.

What about sensitive data?

Security teams handle vulnerability details, credentials in logs and customer data. Whichever route you choose, read the provider's data terms, decide what may be pasted, and keep secrets out of prompts.

What to do

  1. Count how many of the five people do mostly editor work and who automates.
  2. Measure two weeks of real usage before choosing.
  3. Price Business seats at 95 dollars a month and compare with a token estimate from your provider's current page.
  4. Confirm credit overage and budget behavior with GitHub in writing.
  5. Write a rule for what data may go into prompts.
  6. Review the choice after one quarter using actual bills.
