A point-in-time scan tells you what was true at build. Continuous monitoring tells you when something you already shipped becomes affected by a newly published advisory. Most teams need both, and the evaluation difference is whether the tool keeps your inventory and re-checks it without being triggered.
The gap between build and today
A release can be clean on Monday and affected by Thursday because an advisory arrived. If scanning only happens in CI, nothing runs until the next build, which for a stable service could be months. Monitoring closes that gap by keeping the component inventory and matching it against new data.
What to test
Ask how the tool stores inventory for deployed versions, not just the latest branch. Ask how quickly new advisory data is incorporated. Simulate a case: choose a dependency and a known vulnerability, remove that finding from your mind, and ask the tool how it would alert you for a different product with the same library. Check where alerts go and whether duplicates are grouped.
When point-in-time is enough
A short lived prototype, an internal tool you rebuild weekly or a project with few dependencies may not need monitoring. If you rebuild and scan often, the build scan covers most of the gap. Be honest about how long your slowest product sits between builds.
Alert hygiene
Monitoring adds alerts, so check controls: severity thresholds, ownership routing, snooze with expiry and the ability to mark not affected with a reason. A monitoring tool without these will be muted within a month, which defeats it.
Ownership routing deserves a final word. An alert that goes to a shared channel is read by nobody. During a trial, check that monitoring can send an alert for a product to the team that owns that product, and that the owner can be found without a spreadsheet. If ownership data is missing, plan time to build it, because monitoring without owners becomes a list of orphaned worries.

Where Safeguard fits
Safeguard offers continuous monitoring on top of SBOM and dependency scanning, with a free scan for a first look.
Quick check
Do I need monitoring if I scan in CI?
If you rebuild frequently, CI scans cover much of the gap. Long lived releases benefit from monitoring.
