Much of the same evidence serves both SOC 2 and ISO 27001: access reviews, change records, training, vendor reviews and incident handling. The two differ in structure. SOC 2 is an attestation report on controls, while ISO 27001 certifies a management system. Map controls once and tag evidence to both.
Where they overlap
Both ask for access control, change management, logging and monitoring, risk assessment, vendor management, incident response and security awareness. A quarterly access review with a dated export and approver can sit under both.
Where they differ
ISO 27001 needs management system elements that SOC 2 does not ask for in the same way: a defined scope, a Statement of Applicability, an internal audit programme, management review and a corrective action process. SOC 2 adds a management written system description and tests operation across a defined period for Type 2.
Plan for both sets of extras. Do not assume covering one covers the other.
Build one control library
Make a single list of your controls, each with an owner, a frequency and an evidence source. Add two columns: SOC 2 criteria and ISO Annex A references. Evidence is collected once and linked to both.
Click through it at your own pace, or open it full screen.
Align the calendar
Pick audit dates that let one internal review feed both. The internal audit and management review needed for ISO can double as a health check for SOC 2 controls. Try not to have both fieldwork windows land in the same month.
Mind the scope
The scope may differ. SOC 2 scope covers the system you describe for customers. ISO scope covers the part of the organization you define. If they differ, document why.
A mapping habit
When you add or change a control, record which SOC 2 criteria and which Annex A items it supports. After a year you have a map that both auditors can follow. Resist the urge to map everything loosely. A control that only partly supports a requirement should be marked partial, with the gap noted.
Evidence quality
Both audits care about evidence being dated, attributable and complete for the period. If your evidence meets the stricter of the two, it serves both. A common habit is to design evidence for the Type 2 operating period and reuse it for ISO surveillance sampling.
Keep one person responsible for the control library so the two programs do not drift apart.
Plan staffing
Running two audits in a year needs more than extra evidence. It needs people time for interviews, reviews and findings. Plan the owners' calendars early and decide who is the single coordinator for both. Without one, the same person gets asked twice for the same file in different formats.
Quick check
Which should we do first?
Look at what your buyers ask for. Many US buyers ask for SOC 2, and many buyers elsewhere ask for ISO 27001. Start with what unblocks revenue.
Safeguard maps evidence to several frameworks in its compliance and evidence automation, so one record can support more than one audit.
