When a Claude Team seat hits its usage limit, Anthropic's pricing page says you can wait for the limit to reset, move to a higher plan, or turn on usage credits to keep working at standard API rates. This post uses prices and wording fetched from the provider page on 18 October 2026.

What does the plan cost?

From the pricing page on 18 October 2026:

  • Standard seat: 20 dollars per seat per month billed annually, or 25 dollars billed monthly.
  • Premium seat: 100 dollars per seat per month billed annually, or 125 dollars billed monthly.

The page describes standard seats as having more usage than the Pro plan, and premium seats as having five times more usage than standard seats. Prices exclude tax. Check the page again before you buy, because prices and limits can change.

How do the limits work?

The page's FAQ says every plan has usage limits that reset on a rolling five hour session window, and that paid plans add weekly limits on top. It also says the provider may apply other limits, such as weekly and monthly caps, to manage capacity. The page does not publish a fixed message count per seat, so any number you hear in a forum is not from this source.

So a seat has two clocks. A heavy burst of work can use up the five hour window while the weekly allowance is untouched. A steady heavy week can exhaust the weekly limit even if no single session did.

What are your three options when you hit a limit?

Wait. The five hour window rolls forward. If you hit the weekly limit, the wait is longer. For occasional hits this costs nothing.

Move up. A person who regularly hits limits can move from a standard to a premium seat. On the published prices, that is the difference between 20 and 100 dollars per month on annual billing, for five times the usage the page states.

Add usage credits. The page says paid plans can turn on usage credits to continue at standard API rates. That is metered spending, so someone should own a budget and an alert for it.

How should a security team choose?

Security work has a particular pattern: long sessions of reading logs, code and advisories, with sudden spikes during an incident. Before you buy premium seats for everyone, look at who actually hits limits. Often two heavy users need premium and the rest do not.

A mixed team is possible in principle, since the page lists both seat types under Team. Confirm how seat mixing works in the admin settings before you plan around it.

What should you not assume?

Do not assume that credits cost the same as a seat's built in usage. Do not assume a limit hit means your data is lost; the page describes limits, not data loss. And do not assume anything about the provider's internal costs. We only use what the page publishes.

What to do

  1. Ask every user to note each time they hit a limit for two weeks, with the time and the task.
  2. Separate people who hit the five hour window from people who hit weekly limits.
  3. Price the move to premium for those users using the figures above, and compare with a capped credit budget.
  4. Set a monthly cap and an owner for usage credits before turning them on.
  5. Keep sensitive incident work on a plan whose data terms your legal team has read.
  6. Re-fetch the pricing page each quarter and update your note.

Quick check

Does hitting the limit delete my work?

The pricing page describes limits as a pause in usage, not data loss. Your conversation history rules come from the product terms, which you should read separately.

Are these prices permanent?

No. They were fetched on 18 October 2026 and can change. Always check the live page.
