When you share a Claude chat, you create a link to a snapshot. Anyone who has the link can read it. Attached files and raw tool data stay private, and messages you send afterward are not included. You can switch the chat back to Private, or revoke links in Settings.
What a shared link is
Anthropic's privacy center says chats are always private by default. Sharing is something you do: click Share in the upper right of the chat, then click Share again in the pop-out to create the link.
The link points to a snapshot of the conversation as it stood when you shared it. It includes the messages before that moment and any artifacts. Messages you send afterward stay private. If you unshare and then share again, the snapshot is refreshed to include the newer messages.
What recipients see, and what they do not
Visible to anyone with the link: the conversation and Claude's responses, plus artifacts.
Not included: attached files, which stay private. For MCP integrations, raw tool call data stays hidden and viewers see only the final output and the conversation.
Be careful with the word "private" here. The article does not discuss search engines or indexing, so do not assume a link is invisible to crawlers. Treat a link as public to whoever receives it, and to whoever they forward it to.
How to unshare
Per chat: open the Share menu, use the visibility dropdown and change the chat from Public to Private. That disables the direct link.
For everything at once on Free, Pro and Max: go to Settings, then Privacy, and click Manage next to Shared chats. The list shows each chat title, the date shared and the link. Choose Unshare to revoke access to the last snapshot you shared.
Work accounts are different
On Team and Enterprise, the privacy center says members can only share chats with others in the same organization, not publicly. Separately, Claude's help center describes project sharing with Can view and Can edit roles, and notes that chats inside a project remain private to their author unless that author shares them.
A pre-share checklist
- Read the whole chat, including early messages you forgot about.
- Look for names, addresses, account numbers, keys and pasted documents.
- Remember a snapshot cannot be edited, only revoked and re-shared.
- Revoke the link when the person has what they need.
Quick check
Will a shared link show my attached files?
No. Anthropic says attached files are not included and remain private.
If I keep chatting after sharing, does the link update?
No. Later messages stay private unless you unshare and share again, which refreshes the snapshot.
