How long Claude keeps your chats: 30 days, 2 years and 5 years

Anthropic's consumer retention rules in plain words: deleted chats, the training setting, safety flags and feedback, and which clock applies to you.

For Claude Free, Pro and Max, a deleted chat disappears from your history at once and is removed from back-end storage within 30 days. Other clocks apply in other cases: up to 5 years if training is on, up to 2 years if a chat is safety flagged, and 5 years for feedback data.

The four clocks

Anthropic's privacy center lists these retention rules for consumer plans. Think of them as four separate clocks, and only one of them is yours to start.

Deleted chats. You delete a conversation. It leaves your history immediately. Anthropic says it is deleted from its back-end systems within 30 days.

Model improvement on. If you allow chats to be used for improving Claude, de-identified chats or coding sessions may be kept up to 5 years in model training pipelines. The article says this applies to new or resumed chats after you enable the setting.

Safety flagged. If automated trust and safety systems flag a chat for a Usage Policy violation, inputs and outputs may be kept for up to 2 years, and classification scores for up to 7 years.

Feedback. Data tied to thumbs up, thumbs down or bug reports is kept for 5 years.

What the table does not say

The pages we read give a deletion window and several special cases. They do not state how long an ordinary, undeleted chat is kept when training is off and nothing is flagged. Do not assume a number. If it matters to you, read Anthropic's current retention article and privacy policy yourself before relying on it.

Anthropic also notes that it may keep data longer when required by law, to resolve disputes, or to combat Usage Policy violations. De-identified or anonymized data may be kept longer for research or statistics.

What to do with this

Turn the clocks into habits.

  • Decide on the training setting first, because it changes the longest clock.
  • Delete chats you no longer need. That starts the 30 day removal window.
  • Treat thumbs up and down as a decision to hand over the whole conversation.
  • Keep truly sensitive material out of any consumer chat. A deletion window is a promise about storage, not about who might have seen the text earlier.

Business plans differ. Anthropic's help center says administrators on Claude for Work can set an organization retention period, and API customers get a standard 30 day retention or optional zero data retention on eligible endpoints. Those controls were not described as available to individual consumer users.

Quick check

If I delete a chat, is it gone in 30 days everywhere?

Anthropic says deleted conversations are deleted from back-end storage within 30 days, but it may keep data longer where the law, a dispute or a policy violation requires it.

Can de-identified data be kept longer than my chat?

Anthropic says anonymized or de-identified data may be kept longer for research or statistics.
