What evidence shows CIS Control 7 vulnerability management is running?

CIS Control 7 is continuous vulnerability management. See which scan history, advisory monitoring and remediation tickets show the cycle is continuous.

CIS Control 7 asks for a plan to continuously assess and track vulnerabilities on all enterprise assets so you can remediate and shrink the window of opportunity for attackers. Evidence is a written process, scan history over time, advisory monitoring, and remediation records with dates.

Reading the overview

CIS describes Control 7, "Continuous Vulnerability Management", as developing a plan to continuously assess and track vulnerabilities on all enterprise assets, in order to remediate and minimize the window of opportunity for attackers, and to monitor public and private industry sources for new threat and vulnerability information.

Two ideas stand out: continuous, and the window. The word continuous means a single annual scan is not the picture. The window is the time between exposure and fix, so evidence should show timing.

Evidence set

A planVulnerability management procedure with scope, roles and targets
Assess all assetsScan coverage report against the asset inventory
ContinuousScan run history showing regular intervals and on change triggers
New informationAdvisory feed subscriptions and records of items acted on
TrackTracker with severity, owner, status
RemediateFix records with dates, and a time to fix by severity trend

The coverage report is where many programs trip. If your scans cover sixty percent of repositories and your inventory lists a hundred, the gap should be visible and have a plan.

Steps to a defensible program

  1. Define scope from your asset inventory.
  2. Set target fix times by severity, and write them down. Targets are your policy choice.
  3. Schedule scans and add scans on pull requests and releases.
  4. Subscribe to advisories for components you ship, and note who triages them.
  5. Prioritize using exploitability and reachability as well as severity score.
  6. Track every finding to closure or to a recorded exception.
  7. Publish a monthly summary with counts, ages and misses against target.

Report misses. A summary that shows some overdue items and what is being done about them is more credible than a flawless chart.

Measure the window

For each fixed finding, compute the time from first detection to fix and from advisory publication to your detection. Track the median and the longest. These two numbers are the window in practice. Review them whenever you change tooling, and keep the history.

Where Safeguard fits

Safeguard offers dependency scanning, reachability analysis and compliance and evidence automation, which can produce dated finding records and framework mapped evidence. Fix PRs are off by default, with every category on Manual. You can try the free scan at gold.safeguard.sh/scan. Mapping is a starting point, not a verdict on compliance.

Quick check

How often is continuous?

The control does not give an interval. Scan as often as assets change, and add triggers for new advisories. Document your schedule.

Do we need to fix everything?

The control is about assessing, tracking and remediating. Prioritize by risk, and record exceptions with reasons.
