Yes. With code execution and file creation turned on, Claude can create Excel (.xlsx), PowerPoint (.pptx), Word (.docx) and PDF files, plus PNG charts and Python scripts. It is available on Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans across web, Claude Desktop and mobile.
What you can do
Anthropic's help article lists file types Claude can create, and says you can upload CSV, TSV and other data files for analysis. Files can be downloaded or saved to Google Drive. The page gives a 30 MB limit per file for uploads and downloads.
How to turn it on
On web and desktop, switch on Code execution and file creation under Settings, then Capabilities. For Team and Enterprise owners it sits under Organization settings, Capabilities. On mobile it is under Settings, Capabilities. A separate Allow network egress toggle controls external data access.
Defaults by plan
- Free, Pro and Max: enabled by default, with network access on.
- Team: enabled by default, and owners can disable it. The page is inconsistent about the default network setting, with one section saying disabled and another saying package managers only, so check your own settings.
- Enterprise: enabled by default for new organizations, with network access off by default and owner controls including domain allowlisting.
What it costs
File creation draws from your plan's usage limits and uses more of them than regular chats. Budget for that if you generate many reports.
Skills help with documents
Anthropic's skills include enhanced handling for Excel, Word, PowerPoint and PDF files, as described in Claude Projects vs Skills vs custom instructions.
Check the output
A generated spreadsheet can look right and still contain wrong formulas or numbers. Open it, test a few cells by hand, and keep the source data. Treat generated files going to customers like any other draft: someone reviews them before they leave.
A safety note
Claude runs code to build these files, so the next question is what that code can reach. See code execution and network egress settings.
Safeguard's free scan at gold.safeguard.sh/scan checks dependencies and is separate from document work.
Good first uses
File creation fits jobs with a clear input and a checkable output. Turn a CSV into a spreadsheet with a summary tab, draft a slide deck from an outline, or build a PDF handout from notes. Ask for the structure you want, such as named sheets and column headers, and say which numbers must tie back to the source. Then spot check totals against the original data before sharing.
Keep the original data file next to the generated one, so a reviewer can trace any figure back to its source.
