A free open source SBOM generator in your CI pipeline is enough if you only need files to hand to customers and you have someone to maintain the pipeline. A platform starts to earn its place when you need to store, search, diff, match against advisories and share SBOMs across many products.
What the free route gives you
Open source generators are good at one job: reading a project and writing a standard SBOM file. For a small team shipping a few products, that can be the whole answer. You add a pipeline step, store the file as a build artifact, and attach it to releases. The cost is engineering time to set up, keep updated and fix when a package manager changes behavior. That cost is usually small at first and grows quietly.
What generation alone does not do
A file is not a program. Someone still has to answer: which of our products contain this library, which version, since when? That means storing every SBOM, indexing components, and matching them against advisories continuously, not just at build time. You can build that with a database and a script, and many teams do. The question is whether you want to own it. Other gaps to plan for are access control for sharing SBOMs with customers, retention, and a way to mark findings as not affected.
A simple decision rule
Stay with open source if you have fewer than a handful of products, a regulator or customer asks only for a file, and an engineer owns the pipeline. Look at a platform if you manage many repositories, need to answer exposure questions within hours, or need non-engineers to use the data. Many teams start free and move later. If you do, check that the platform ingests the SBOMs you already generate, so the move is a switch of storage and analysis, not a restart.
Questions to settle before choosing
Who maintains the pipeline in two years? What happens when the generator misses an ecosystem? How will you know an SBOM is stale? If the honest answers are all fine, build. If they make you uneasy, price the effort of building, in people's time rather than licenses, and compare.
One more consideration is bus factor. A home built pipeline often lives in one person's head. If that person leaves, the SBOM step becomes a mystery that breaks on a toolchain upgrade. Write a one page runbook even for a free setup, and schedule a yearly review. Whether you build or buy, the outcome you want is the same: accurate files, findable history, and no single person who is irreplaceable.
Where Safeguard fits
Safeguard runs SBOM and dependency scanning with reachability analysis, and you can try it on a repository with the free scan.
Quick check
Is an SBOM file by itself useful?
Yes for compliance and customer requests. It becomes much more useful when you can query it across products and match it to new advisories.
