The best CSPM tool is the one that covers the clouds you actually run, checks against the benchmarks you must meet, and produces findings your team will fix. For one AWS account, a native service or an open source scanner is enough. Multi-cloud teams usually need a tool that spans providers.
Safeguard publishes this guide and sells a competing product, so we describe other tools only from their own documentation. Facts below are as of 19 October 2026.
Key takeaways
- CSPM means continuously checking cloud configuration against a standard, then reporting what drifts.
- Native tools (AWS Security Hub CSPM, Microsoft Defender CSPM, Google Security Command Center) are the fastest start inside one provider.
- Open source scanners such as Prowler and Scout Suite cost no license fee and run from a command line.
- Multi-cloud coverage, prioritization and remediation workflow are what separate tools, not the number of checks.
- Pick two or three candidates and run each against the same real account before you decide.
What is a CSPM tool?
A cloud security posture management tool reads your cloud configuration through provider APIs and compares it with a security standard. It reports misconfigurations such as public storage, missing MFA or open network rules.
Microsoft describes CSPM as providing "continuous visibility into the security state of your cloud assets and workloads." AWS describes Security Hub CSPM as running "continuous, account-level configuration and security checks" against best practices and industry standards.
How do the main CSPM options compare?
The table uses only what each vendor or project says on its own page. Pricing changes often, so check the linked pages before you budget.
| Tool | Type | Clouds covered | Standards named in docs | Cost model stated in docs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Prowler | Open source CLI, dashboard, optional local server | AWS, Azure, GCP, Kubernetes, M365, GitHub and others | CIS, NIST, PCI-DSS, GDPR, HIPAA, SOC 2, ISO 27001 and more | Apache 2.0 license |
| Scout Suite | Open source CLI with HTML report | AWS, Azure, GCP; several others in alpha | Not stated in the README | Open source |
| AWS Security Hub CSPM | AWS native service | AWS accounts and Regions | AWS Foundational Security Best Practices, CIS, PCI DSS, NIST | 30 day free trial per account, then usage priced |
| Microsoft Defender CSPM | Azure native, with connectors | Azure, AWS, GCP, on premises via Azure Arc | Microsoft Cloud Security Benchmark, regulatory standards in paid plan | Foundational CSPM free, Defender CSPM paid |
| Google Security Command Center | Google Cloud native | Google Cloud; AWS and Azure connectors listed under the Enterprise tier | NIST, HIPAA, PCI DSS, CIS | Tiers: Standard, Premium, Enterprise |
Two details from the docs matter for planning. Security Hub CSPM only detects findings generated after you enable it, and it works per Region, so full CIS coverage requires enabling it in every supported Region. Google's documentation says the Enterprise tier shuts down on 21 May 2027, with Enterprise organizations moving to Premium on or after that date.
Which CSPM tool is best for a startup on one cloud?
Start with the native service for your cloud. It needs no extra vendor, and the free or trial tiers let you see real findings before you spend money.
On AWS, enable Security Hub CSPM and AWS Config, since the docs say most control findings require AWS Config recording. On Azure, Foundational CSPM is free. On Google Cloud, Security Command Center can be activated per project or per organization.
Which CSPM tool is best for multi-cloud?
For two or more providers, pick a tool built to span them. Prowler lists official support for AWS, Azure, GCP, Kubernetes, M365 and others, and Scout Suite lists AWS, Azure and GCP.
Microsoft's Defender CSPM connects AWS and GCP accounts to the Azure portal. If your security team already lives in Microsoft tooling, that is a natural fit. If not, an open source scanner gives you one report format across providers without a second console.
Is there a free CSPM tool?
Yes. Prowler is Apache 2.0 licensed and runs with a single command.
pip install prowler
prowler aws
Microsoft's Foundational CSPM plan is free, and AWS gives a 30 day trial of Security Hub CSPM per account. Free tools tell you what is wrong. They usually leave ticketing, ownership and trend reporting to you.
What should you check when evaluating CSPM?
Use this checklist on every candidate, and score each one against the same test account.
- Does it cover every cloud and account type you run today, and the ones planned in 12 months?
- Does it check against the standard your customers or auditors ask for?
- Can it run on a schedule and alert, or is it a one time snapshot?
- Does each finding name the resource, the owner and a fix?
- Can you suppress an accepted risk with a reason and an expiry?
- Does it export to your ticketing or SIEM system?
- What does it cost at your account and resource count, including the cloud services it relies on?
Does CSPM replace code scanning?
No. CSPM sees the deployed state, not the code or dependencies that produced it. Infrastructure as code scanners catch the same mistakes earlier, and dependency scanning covers a different risk entirely.
For the dependency side, Safeguard offers a free in-browser scan at gold.safeguard.sh/scan. The file stays on your machine, no login is needed, and it accepts up to 100 dependencies. The Gold registry lists packages and CVEs with CISA KEV status.
Frequently asked questions
What does CSPM stand for?
Cloud security posture management. It means continuously checking cloud configuration against security standards.
Is CSPM the same as CNAPP?
No. CSPM is one capability. Microsoft describes its CNAPP as combining CSPM, DevSecOps and workload protection.
Can open source CSPM tools pass an audit?
They can produce evidence against frameworks such as CIS, but an audit depends on your controls and your auditor. Treat tool output as evidence, not as a pass.
How often should a CSPM scan run?
Native services check continuously. For a CLI scanner, run it at least daily from a scheduled job, and after any large infrastructure change.
Do CSPM tools fix problems automatically?
Some support automation. AWS describes automation rules and EventBridge actions for Security Hub CSPM findings. Review any automatic fix before enabling it in production.
