Evaluate security tooling for an AI-heavy team by testing five areas on your own repositories: libraries, model artifacts, agent tools and MCP servers, identity and permissions, and evidence. Below are ten short answers to the questions engineering leaders ask most, each linked to a longer post.
The ten answers
1. What should we test first? Inventory. Plant a library, a model file and a test MCP server in a small repo and see what the tool lists. See how to test a tool on model dependencies.
2. Does an AI feature mean AI coverage? No. It describes how the tool works, not what it can see. See five coverage myths.
3. Does a dependency scanner see model files? Often not, because models are not in lockfiles. See ML libraries and model files.
4. How do we check MCP coverage? Install a local and a remote test server and look for tools, scopes and approvals. See testing MCP coverage.
5. What evidence should the tool produce? Dated, exportable records of scans, approvals and gate decisions. See evidence for auditors.
6. Does reachability work on agent code? For traceable paths, yes. Dynamic dispatch is weaker. See reachability on agent code.
7. Do we need an ML-BOM? Only if you ship or load models. Otherwise an SBOM is enough. See ML-BOM or SBOM.
8. What if the tool has gaps? Keep a gap register with owners and dates. See covering most but not all risks.
9. Who should evaluate? Six roles, including an ML engineer and a developer. See the evaluation team.
10. One platform or several tools? Platform first for small teams, specialists when a measured gap needs one. See one platform or several.
A compact scoring sheet
| Area | Native | Integration | Not covered |
|---|---|---|---|
| Libraries | |||
| Model artifacts | |||
| Agent tools and MCP | |||
| Identity and permissions | |||
| Evidence |
Mark each candidate once, after testing, never from a datasheet.
How long to take
A narrow demo test takes an hour. A trial on real repositories takes two to four weeks. Add a week for contract and data handling review. Faster than that and you test only what the vendor chose to show.
Try it yourself

Safeguard offers SBOM and dependency scanning, reachability analysis, policies and gates, agent identity, MCP Guardrail, asset discovery and compliance evidence automation. Try the free scan at gold.safeguard.sh/scan.
Quick check
What is the single most useful test?
Bring your own small repository with planted items and compare the tool's output with your list.
Should we wait for the market to settle?
Waiting leaves the gaps open. Start with a platform that exports open formats, keep a gap register and revisit in a quarter.
