A 30 minute leadership briefing on supply chain risk works best with four numbers, three decisions and no jargon. Spend ten minutes on where you stand, ten on what changed, and ten on what you need leaders to decide. Send one page ahead of time.
Before the meeting
Ask engineering for a one page summary and a current inventory date. If the inventory is more than a few weeks old, say so up front. Agree on one named presenter who can answer follow up questions.
The agenda
| Minutes | Topic | Output |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 5 | Why this matters in plain words | Shared frame |
| 5 to 15 | Four numbers | Where we stand |
| 15 to 20 | What changed since last time | Trend |
| 20 to 28 | Three decisions | Owners and dates |
| 28 to 30 | Recap | Written actions |
The four numbers
- Components in the main products and the date of the inventory
- Serious findings, and how many are known exploited
- Findings reachable in our code
- Days from announcement to deployed fix for the last serious issue
CISA suggests using its known exploited catalog as one input to prioritization, which makes the second number easy to produce. FIRST says severity scores alone do not measure risk, which is why the third matters.
Three decisions to bring
- Which products or vendors need deeper review this quarter
- Which deadline we set for fixing serious issues
- Who owns the process if the current owner is away
What to leave out
Raw counts of every finding, tool names, and long incident stories. Leaders need direction and trend, not a scanner export.
Afterwards
Send the actions within a day. Put the same four numbers in next quarter's briefing so progress is easy to see.
Where Safeguard fits
Safeguard produces SBOMs and scans dependencies, and its reachability analysis shows which findings your code actually uses. You can run a free scan on a repository to see an inventory for yourself.
Quick check
How often should leaders get this briefing?
Quarterly is a common rhythm, with an extra session if a widely shared library is found to be flawed.
What if engineering cannot produce the numbers?
Then the first action is to build the inventory. That is a useful outcome of the first meeting.
