Who should be alerted when a new advisory matches a stored SBOM?

Alert the owning team first, security second and leadership only above a severity and exposure threshold. Here are alert rules that avoid fatigue.

When a new advisory matches a stored SBOM, alert the owning team of the affected product first, product security second, and leadership only when severity and exposure cross a threshold you set in advance. Route by ownership, deduplicate per advisory, and keep a daily digest for everything else.

The problem alerts must solve

Stored SBOMs are only useful if new information reaches the right person soon. Too few alerts and exposure goes unnoticed. Too many and people mute the channel. The target is a small number of alerts that each have an owner and a next step.

Who gets what

RecipientGetsWhen
Owning teamFinding with product, release, path and fix hintEvery match on their products above a minimum severity
Product securityCross product view of new matchesDaily digest, immediate for high severity and exposed
Release managerFindings that affect a release in progressWhen a release candidate is matched
Leadership or risk ownerSummary of a major eventOnly for matches above your severity and exposure threshold
Customer support or successCustomer facing talking pointsAfter security confirms impact

This relies on ownership fields being in place. Without them, every alert goes to a general channel and nobody feels responsible.

Rules that cut noise

  1. One alert per advisory per product, not per component per release. Group the releases inside.
  2. Add context. Include reachability, exposure and whether a fix exists. An alert that says only "new advisory" starts a research task for the reader.
  3. Set severity floors per audience. Teams may want medium and above, leadership critical only.
  4. Suppress known statuses. If a finding is already marked not affected with a valid reason, do not alert again unless the reason expires. See tracking vulnerability status.
  5. Escalate by time. If nobody acknowledges within an agreed window, move up one level.
  6. Digest the rest. A daily or weekly summary for low severity matches keeps visibility without interruptions.

Channels

Match the channel to urgency. Chat for fast acknowledgement, tickets for work with an owner and due date, email for digests. Whatever the channel, the alert should link to the record, not carry the full detail in the message, so access control still applies. Do not post customer names or sensitive component details in broad channels.

Rescanning old SBOMs

New advisories are published against components you already shipped. Rematching stored SBOMs, without rebuilding anything, is what makes these alerts possible. The article on rescanning stored SBOMs when a new advisory lands describes the mechanism, and which vulnerability sources matching should use covers input data.

Measure the alerts

Track how many alerts fire, how many lead to action, and median time to acknowledge. If most alerts end in no action, tighten the floors. If actions come late, review routing.

Spreadsheet comparison

A spreadsheet cannot alert. Someone must remember to check advisories and filter the rows. That works until the day it is a holiday week.

Quick check

Should leadership get every alert?

No. Send leadership only major events above a severity and exposure threshold, and a short periodic summary.

Why group alerts by advisory?

One advisory can match many releases. A single grouped alert avoids flooding the owner with duplicates.
