Hugging Face scan results: what a clean badge does and does not mean

The Hub scans uploads with ClamAV, a pickle import check and partner scanners. A clean result lowers risk but is not proof a model is safe to load.

A clean scan result on a Hugging Face model page means the automated checks found nothing they recognise. It is useful signal, not a safety guarantee. The Hub's own documentation says its pickle scan is not foolproof, and that users are responsible for deciding whether something is safe.

What the Hub scans for

The Hub documents several layers. Files smaller than 2 GB are run through the ClamAV malware scanner at each commit. A pickle import scan extracts the list of imports from pickled files and highlights any that look suspicious. And partner scanners add their own reports on public repositories: the docs describe Protect AI's Guardian as catching pickle, Keras and other exploits, and JFrog's scanner as detecting malicious behaviour in machine learning models while aiming to reduce false positives.

The Hub docs also describe secrets scanning, which runs TruffleHog on each push to find hard-coded secrets. That protects the uploader, not you as a model consumer.

Reading the statuses

The malware scanning page notes that if a file shows neither an ok nor an infected badge, it may be waiting to be scanned, currently being scanned, or the scan may have hit an error. So the absence of a red flag is not a green flag.

The pickle documentation adds that ClamAV covers a good amount of dangerous files but not pickle exploits. That is why the separate import scan exists.

Why a clean result is not proof

  • The pickle docs say the check is not 100% foolproof and that the lists of safe and unsafe imports are best effort.
  • Scanners look for known bad patterns. A new technique can slip through, and the Hub documents partner scanners partly because one scanner is not enough.
  • Scanning checks files, not intent. A model with poisoned behaviour but valid weights can scan clean.
  • Scan results reflect a moment in time and a revision. Pin the revision you looked at.

How to use scan results in a review

  1. Treat red flags as an immediate stop.
  2. Treat pending or errored scans as unknown, and wait or reject.
  3. Treat clean results as one input, next to author reputation, file format, license and your own tests.
  4. Prefer formats without executable content for weights.
  5. Record the scan status, date and revision in your intake record.

Quick check

The page shows no warning. Can I load the file in production?

Not on that basis alone. No warning can mean clean, pending, or a scan error. Check the badges, the format and the source, and test in isolation first.

Do partner scanners replace my own review?

No. They add coverage, but the Hub says responsibility for the safety decision stays with the user.
