Automate the evidence that systems already produce: configuration states, scan results, access lists, change records and logs, collected on a schedule with dates and stored in a tamper-resistant place. FedRAMP's 20x program explicitly values continuous, automatically validated evidence over static documents, but people still own the decisions.
What is FedRAMP 20x?
FedRAMP's 20x page describes a new approach focused on providers' security decisions and their measured effectiveness, instead of control by control compliance. Providers set security goals and show how well they are met. The first phase concentrated on Key Security Indicators as a proof of concept for automated validation. The page says these indicators can show posture in near real time, which can replace static yearly manual assessments, and that once goals and measures are defined, outcomes should be validated automatically where possible.
The page lists certification classes: Class A (pilot), Class B (low), Class C (moderate) and Class D (high, to be developed in a later phase). It describes phases through FY27 and says FedRAMP plans to stop accepting new Rev5 certifications on 11 June 2027, with a note that future dates are estimates and may shift. Check fedramp.gov for current status before planning around any date.
This is an explainer about the program. Safeguard does not state any FedRAMP authorization here.
What can be automated first?
Choose evidence that is repetitive, objective and produced by a system.
- Inventory. Asset lists and software inventories pulled from cloud and build systems daily.
- Vulnerability scan results. Scheduled scans with dates, severity and remediation status.
- Configuration state. Settings for encryption, logging and network rules, exported and compared with a baseline.
- Identity and access. User and role lists, multi-factor status and review sign-offs.
- Change records. Approved pull requests and deployments tied to tickets.
- Logging and monitoring. Proof that logs flow, retention is set and alerts fire.
What should stay human?
Risk decisions, exceptions and the narrative. A scanner can show a finding; a person decides whether to accept it, with a recorded reason and an expiry date. Policies, incident exercises and supplier reviews also need judgement.
What makes automated evidence trustworthy?
Four properties. It is timestamped. It comes from the source system by an API or export, not by hand. It is stored where the collector cannot silently rewrite it. And each item is mapped to the requirement it supports so a reviewer can find it.
How does the software supply chain fit?
For a cloud service the build pipeline is in scope for several topics: how components are inventoried, how vulnerabilities in them are found and fixed, and who can change what reaches production. A per release dependency inventory, dated scan output and pipeline settings are all machine readable evidence. Safeguard offers compliance automation that maps findings and evidence to frameworks, shown in the demo below. Mapping is not authorization, and an assessor decides what is accepted.

What are common mistakes?
Automating before agreeing what each control needs, so you collect mountains of unusable data. Letting collectors run with broad permissions. Dropping documents in a folder without a mapping. And forgetting to alert when a collector fails, which leaves silent gaps.
What to do
- Read the current FedRAMP 20x requirements for the class you target.
- List each requirement and the system that can prove it.
- Build collectors with read-only access, run them on a schedule and timestamp everything.
- Store evidence in write-once or versioned storage with a mapping to the requirement.
- Alert when a collector fails or evidence goes stale.
- Keep a human review step for exceptions and risk acceptances.
Quick check
Does automating evidence mean we are authorized?
No. Authorization is a decision by the program and agencies. Automation makes your evidence faster to produce and easier to check.
Will dates in the 20x plan change?
FedRAMP says future dates are estimates and may shift. Read the current page before planning.
