What is the difference between DSPM and CSPM?

CSPM checks cloud settings for misconfiguration. DSPM finds and classifies sensitive data and who can reach it. They answer different questions.

CSPM (cloud security posture management) checks whether cloud resources are configured safely. DSPM (data security posture management) finds sensitive data and checks who can reach it and how it is protected. CSPM asks whether the bucket is locked down. DSPM asks what is inside it and whether it matters.

Where do the terms come from?

Both are industry labels for tool categories, not NIST or ISO terms, so definitions vary by vendor. The underlying activities do appear in standards, which is the safest way to reason about them. This post uses the standards for the ideas and treats the acronyms as shorthand.

What does CSPM do?

CSPM compares cloud settings against rules and flags drift. Typical checks are whether storage is public, whether encryption is on, whether logging is enabled, whether a network rule exposes an admin port, and whether an identity has excessive rights. This is secure configuration management applied to cloud accounts. The CIS Critical Security Controls include secure configuration of enterprise assets and software, and NIST SP 800-53 has a configuration management family along the same lines.

The question it answers: are our cloud resources set up the way our policy says?

What does DSPM do?

DSPM starts from the data. It locates data stores across cloud services, samples or classifies what they hold, such as personal data, credentials or financial records, and reports who and what can access them and whether protections apply. The standards idea behind it is categorization: NIST SP 800-53 control RA-2, Security Categorization, says to categorize the system and the information it processes, stores and transmits. The CIS Controls have a Data Protection control that begins with knowing what data you have.

The question it answers: where is our sensitive data, who can reach it, and is it protected in proportion to its value?

How do they overlap and differ?

They share some findings. A public bucket is a configuration problem that CSPM flags. Whether the bucket holds marketing images or customer records changes how urgent it is, and that context comes from data classification. Used together, one tells you the door is open and the other tells you what is in the room.

CSPM works from the resource and its settings, and it is mostly about the control plane. DSPM works from the content, and so it needs access to read or sample data, which raises its own privacy and access questions that you should settle before deployment.

Constructed example: two storage buckets

An account holds two buckets with the same weak policy. One contains public website assets. The other contains exported support tickets with names and addresses. A configuration scanner lists both as medium findings. A data aware check marks the second as holding personal data and moves it to the top of the queue. The team fixes that one in an hour and the other next week.

Do you need both?

Not necessarily at once. A small team with a handful of cloud accounts may handle posture with a benchmark checklist and a manual data inventory. A larger one with data spread across many stores needs automation for both. Start with the one that matches your biggest unknown: if you do not know your settings, begin with configuration. If you do not know where sensitive data sits, begin with data discovery.

How to check or apply this

  1. List cloud accounts and the services holding data in each.
  2. Run a configuration review against a published benchmark for your provider and fix public exposure first.
  3. Write a simple data classification scheme with three or four levels.
  4. Sample data stores for the sensitive classes you defined and record owners.
  5. Join the two lists so exposure findings are ranked by data sensitivity.
  6. Decide what read access any data discovery tool gets, and log it.

Quick check

Is DSPM a replacement for CSPM?

No. DSPM adds data context. CSPM covers configuration. Many teams want both, in some order.

Are DSPM and CSPM defined by a standard?

No. They are product category names. The activities map to standards such as NIST SP 800-53 and the CIS Controls.
