CVE-2026-71179 is a high severity (CVSS 7.3) OS command injection in Dell Update Package (DUP) Framework versions before 26.07.03. A low privileged local attacker could use it to elevate privileges. The fix is to use version 26.07.03 or later, as stated in the record.
What's affected
Dell Update Package Framework versions prior to 26.07.03, per the record. The same Dell advisory, DSA-2026-417, also covers CVE-2026-71180, which affects the same version range. I could not fetch the advisory, so I cannot add detail on interim releases.
The weakness is CWE-78, improper neutralization of special elements used in an OS command. The vector is AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R: local access, low complexity, low privileges and a required user action, with high impact across confidentiality, integrity and availability.
DUPs are the self-contained packages Dell publishes for drivers, BIOS and firmware, so the framework runs during hardware updates, often with administrator rights.
How to check if you're exposed
Dell's advisory page returned an access denied error when I tried to fetch it, so the version below comes from the CVE record only. Read the advisory in a browser before you act on it.
Because DUP is a framework inside update packages rather than one installed program, the version is tied to the package files you downloaded. Check the version of the DUP files in your software repository and in any deployment share. Look at the file properties or release notes of the package for the framework version, and compare with 26.07.03.
Old DUP files tend to sit in shared folders and get reused for years. Search those folders for packages older than the fixed release and replace them.
free in-browser dependency scan is for application dependencies, not vendor update packages.
What to do now
- Read Dell advisory DSA-2026-417 in a browser and confirm the fixed framework version.
- Find the Dell Update Packages stored in your repositories and deployment shares.
- Replace packages built on a framework before 26.07.03 with current ones.
- Limit who can run update packages interactively on servers.
- Apply the same steps for CVE-2026-71180, which sits in the same advisory.
Why it matters
CWE-78 arises when text from a user ends up inside a command line that the system shell runs. Special characters change the meaning of the command, so the program runs more than the author intended. The fix is to avoid the shell, or to pass arguments in a way that cannot be reinterpreted.
The record frames the outcome as elevation of privileges. An update framework that runs as administrator is a natural place for that to matter, since a low privileged user who can reach it may gain the higher rights it uses.
Quick check
Is this the same as CVE-2026-71180?
No. Both are fixed in Dell's DSA-2026-417 and affect versions before 26.07.03, but they are separate flaws. 71179 is command injection, and 71180 is an unchecked return value.
