CVE-2026-20997 is a critical signature verification flaw (CVSS 9.8) in Samsung Smart Switch before version 3.7.69.15. Because the app does not properly verify a cryptographic signature, remote attackers could bypass authentication. Samsung fixed it in 3.7.69.15, so update Smart Switch to that version or later.
What's affected
The record names Samsung Smart Switch versions before 3.7.69.15, and 3.7.69.15 is the fixed version. The weakness is CWE-347 (improper verification of cryptographic signature). The vector is CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H.
A companion record, CVE-2026-20998, covers improper authentication in the same versions and carries the same score. They were published together in the March 2026 Samsung bulletin, which I could load but which did not show the CVE text, so check it for further detail.
The record does not mark this as exploited in the wild, and it is not in the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog.
How to check if you're exposed
Open Smart Switch on each computer or device where it is installed and check the version number in the application's about or settings screen. If it is below 3.7.69.15, update it.
For managed fleets, query your software inventory for the Smart Switch application and its version. Note computers where it was installed once and forgotten, because that is where old versions stay.
What to do now
- Update Smart Switch to 3.7.69.15 or later from Samsung.
- Use your software inventory to find every copy, including on spare laptops and shared machines.
- Remove Smart Switch from computers that no longer need it.
- Do the same check for CVE-2026-20998, which has the same fixed version.
- Download the app only from Samsung and not from third party sites.
Why it matters
A cryptographic signature proves that data came from the party who holds a private key and has not been changed. If a program checks the signature wrongly, or skips a step, an attacker can supply data that looks genuine. When a program uses that data to decide who is allowed in, the authentication step can be bypassed.
The lesson for developers is to treat verification as a security boundary and to test the failure cases: wrong key, missing signature, altered content. For users, the fix is simply the version update.
Quick check
Is this the same flaw as CVE-2026-20998?
No. It is a companion record for the same product and versions. The fixed version is the same, so one update covers both.
