CVE-2026-18832 is a high severity heap based buffer overflow (CVSS 8.8) in IBM AIX 7.2 and 7.3 and IBM PowerVM VIOS 4.1. A remote attacker could execute arbitrary code. The CVSS vector marks it as reachable from an adjacent network. IBM bulletin 7283858 lists the fixes.

What's affected

Per the record, IBM AIX 7.2 and 7.3 and IBM PowerVM VIOS 4.1. The vector uses the adjacent network attack vector, meaning the attacker needs to be on the same network segment rather than anywhere on the internet. IBM says fixes come in service packs and fix packs.

How to check if you're exposed

Check the OS level:

oslevel -s

For VIOS, in the padmin shell:

ioslevel

Compare against the levels in IBM's bulletin.

Safeguard's free dependency scan at gold.safeguard.sh/scan reads manifests and lock files, so it will not see device firmware or an installed appliance. Use it for the application dependencies around this product, and use the vendor's own version check for the product itself.

What to do now

  1. List every AIX and VIOS host and its level.
  2. Apply the fixes in IBM bulletin 7283858, following the NIM and VIOS notes.
  3. Segment management and storage networks so untrusted hosts cannot sit adjacent to AIX systems.
  4. Reboot or restart services as the bulletin directs and verify the new level.

Why it matters

A heap overflow, CWE-787 (out-of-bounds write), is memory corruption. Writing past a buffer can overwrite neighboring data and, in the worst case, let an attacker run their own code. The record gives no privileges needed and no user interaction.

Because the vector is adjacent network, the practical risk depends on who shares your network segments. Treat VLANs and VIOS networks as part of your patch priority. The CVE is not in CISA's KEV list.

Quick check

Can it be exploited over the internet?

The vector is adjacent network, so the attacker generally needs access to the same segment.

Is code execution confirmed in the wild?

The record says an attacker could execute code. It does not report attacks, and the CVE is not in KEV.
