CVE-2025-9296 is a Medium severity (CVSS 4.7) unrestricted file upload in Emlog Pro up to 2.5.18, in the avatar update function of the admin area. The record says the vendor did not respond, so no fixed version is confirmed. Restrict admin access and block script execution in upload folders.

What's affected

The record lists Emlog Pro up to 2.5.18. The affected file is /admin/blogger.php with the action update_avatar, and manipulation of the argument image leads to unrestricted upload. The record says the attack can be launched remotely, that the exploit has been disclosed publicly, and that the vendor was contacted early but did not respond. The score is 4.7 with the vector CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:L. The high privilege requirement (PR:H) means an attacker needs an administrator style account, which is why the score is moderate.

The reporter issue linked from the record could not be retrieved when we checked, so we have only the record's account. We could not confirm a fixed version, so check the vendor's release notes for anything newer than 2.5.18.

How to check if you're exposed

  1. Open the Emlog admin panel and read the version in the footer or system information. Anything up to 2.5.18 is in scope.
  2. Review who holds admin level accounts on the site. The flaw needs one.
  3. List files in the avatar and upload folders and look for anything that is not an image.
  4. Confirm your web server does not execute scripts from upload directories.

What to do now

  1. Restrict the admin area to trusted IP addresses or put it behind a VPN or an extra authentication layer.
  2. Reduce the number of admin accounts, enforce strong passwords and add multi factor authentication where you can.
  3. Configure the web server so files in upload directories are served as static content and never run as scripts.
  4. Check the vendor site for a newer release and read its notes, then upgrade.
  5. Audit the upload folders now and after any suspicious admin login.

Why it matters

The weakness classes are CWE-434 (unrestricted upload of a file with a dangerous type) and CWE-284 (improper access control). When an upload handler does not check what it receives, a file meant to be a picture can be something else. Where a server runs uploaded content, that can become code execution, which is why upload folders must never be executable.

The record does not list the CVE as a CISA Known Exploited Vulnerability. The vendor silence matters more than the score: with no confirmed fix, your controls around the admin area are the defense.
